I did this tribute for fun to celebrate Giant Size X-Men #1, which debuted 50 years ago this month, February 1975! It marked the relaunch of the X-Men comic after a multi year hiatus and the beginning of the titles ascension to the most popular title in the comic book industry throughout the late 70's and all of the 80's.

John contributed SO MUCH to the X-Mens success during his time on the series and this tribute piece focuses on a bunch of his creations and characters as well as a majority of the memorable heroes and villains that appeared over the course of the first 10 years of the relaunch, from 1975 to 1985, with much love also shown for the work and artistry of Len Wein & Dave Cockrum, Chris Claremont, Terry Austin and Paul Smith.

These are the stories that expanded my love of comics and the era i'll always hold the greatest affection for. Those four artists have all had a huge impact on my art and I hold them all up among the greatest comic book artists of all time.

I could live without Lockheed, but the rest is super cool.

Xcellent!

Is that the Endeavor from Micronauts in front of Ka-Zar and Zabu?

And I can understand your reasons re: Lockheed, JB, but he was there with
my introduction during Smith’s run and I have to admit a fondness for the
little guy. Did Chris ever mention wanting him as a character while you were
on the book?

VERY cool, Dusty.

That’s interesting. Given what happened in “Kitty’s Fairy Tale” with Dave, I
figured he’d been pushing for him for some time.

A lot of really good stuff here. Very much like Kitty and the Storm next to the "N."

This is really well done!  I especially like the very JB-style Kitty Pryde.

This was the era I was reading and the memories...

Interesting. My first thought was that Dusty had made Kitty entirely his own.

Brian - that IS the Endeavour. Good catch. Loved that ship.

Re Kitty - Dusty has made her his own, but she is clearly ‘your’ Kitty - curly
hair, skinny & flat chested. What happened to that girl I wonder.

Dusty - how on earth do you design these mega compositions? I marvel @
how you get things to fit together & remain coherent.

Okay—I must ask what the Endeavor is doing in this piece…?
