Just did some quick, conservative math, and my output for fifty years at the board works out to more than 30,000 pages and covers.

Allowing for downtime, I gave each year 11 months, and restricted those months to 22 working days, ignoring the many years that I worked 7 days a week. I also calculated at slightly less than my normal production rate of three pages a day.

If a picture happened to exist, should it be posted or leave it to urban legend?

If you were able to get a decent picture, post away!

Again, incredible. To think that does not include conversation sketches, commissions or the untold amount of doodles.

It was definitely one of your more fleeting works of art.

(It's bad enough I turned 50 on the same day that Olivia Newton-John died... then I find out, after the fact, that it's the same day John Byrne retired!!)

Remind me to not check any news feeds when I hit the Big 6-0...

I find myself remembering Chris Claremont phoning to ask how many pages I drew in a day. Someone had asked, and he wanted to publish the number in the lettercol.

I told him three pages a day of finished pencils or six of breakdowns.

A few months later the issue came out, and I found Chris had reported my output as two pages of pencils, four of breakdowns.

I called him. “What the ****?!?”

“Oh, I didn’t think anyone would believe your real speed.”

In later years, when I sometimes saw my work described as “rushed” I wondered if some ghost of Chris’ “rewrite” was haunting some people’s minds.

It certainly didn't help that Mr Claremont himself was propagating that misinformation.

At a Creation Con in Chicago in 1984 he was hosting a Marvel panel with Carl Potts and during the Q&A part someone ( inevitably ) asked the question "will you and John Byrne ever work together again"? And his response was basically "time will tell" but of course he had to add on that he felt your work looked "rushed" since you stopped working with him.

Pretty obnoxious of him IMHO.

I love that you retired.
& that, financially, you were able to retire.
I read of so many of my comic book heroes - creators - who were unable to
be financially stable in their later years & it breaks my heart.

Congratulations. Enjoy every minute of it - to the degree that we enjoyed
your working years.

Years ago I met a delightful elderly couple at a con. He was a guest, and in his day had been a fairly big name. By then, tho, conventions were their life. They lived in hotels and their income came from selling art.

It honestly scared the heck out of me!

Have you been able to settle into a routine to replace the time you spent at the drawing board? And does it feel strange to NOT sit at the board and work your magic?

I’ve been avoiding routine.

And I don’t miss it!
