Great thread!

Romita Superman and Buscema Batman are amazing, I need a parallel universe where they drew their titles for a decade or two!

And that Ditko Superman is... well, very Ditko.

Here is Kirby's original pencilled artwork for the 1977 calendar cover.

Here's a few DEFENDERS covers Kirby did.  Sure, he drew the Hulk plenty before, but it's fun to look in the background and see Kirby's take on Dr. Strange, Valkyrie, Luke Cage, Nighthawk, and Hellcat!

This string of DEFENDERS covers by Kirby rather contradicts the idea that they are “rarities”.

Thanks for sharing that, Colin. I'm far from an art
expert, but even I suspected that he must have been
inked/finished with a pretty heavy hand there.

That looks like Romita Sr. No shade on JR, but that would be a “heavy hand” by definition.

(Mike Higgins tells the amusing tale of his early days at Marvel, walking into Romita’s office to find him redrawing the Cap faces on an Alan Weiss issue of Captain America. As Higgins tells it Romita felt this was necessary so “people can tell it’s Captain America.” Higgins boggled. “You don’t think the big f**king A on his forehead takes care of that??”

(Extra irony: in fact the character Romita was redrawing was someone disguised as Cap!!)

Here's Bernie Wrightson drawing MAN-Thing for a change (appropriately enough, in a book written by his old swampy collaborator Len Wein):

HELL YES to the Buscema Batman. The AParo Cap is pretty awesome, too. Goes to show the pros of the '70s could draw on model regardless of character or experience with the character.

Superman by Frazetta:

Well, I tried to post it, but I keep getting foiled by the pixel width limit.  Why does this board have that limit anyway?

Not my board, but. just a guess: if you don't set a limit, people will abuse it.
