Joe told me that Stan encouraged him to rework Kirby’s pencils. He preferred Joe’s smooth, sophisticated line to Jack’s more craggy pencils. During the period when Kirby’s art was beginning to flow thru the Office on its way back to Jack, Mike Higgins and I scooped up a stack of pages and took them to Mike Carlin’s office to study. Kirby’s pencils were still visible under Sinnott’s inks, and the contrast was remarkable. There was one profile of Reed where what Jack had drawn looked more like Dick Tracy! (Another interesting contrast can be seen in the Silver Surfer trade paperback from the Seventies. There Joe—or his assistants, by then—chose to be much more faithful to Jack’s art.)

Re: “This is how I do it!” becomes the mantra.

I love Gene Colan's art, particularly on Tomb of Dracula and Doctor Strange, but I always felt his Daredevil seemed a little too 'heavy set' for what I felt was such a balletic character.
Mind you, the Hulk seems to be portrayed as anything from car-sized to airplane hangar sized these days!

You’ve hit on something so fascinating to me about Colan’s work - it’s a conflict between a flowing uplift and a heavy gravity. It’s like his pages were formed from Jupiter’s atmosphere.

Tomb of Dracula and Doctor Strange

Maybe it's the way he draws a cloak!

I was fascinated by the way Colan’s version of Dracula’s cloak was almost a hole in space. Arms and legs would emerge seemingly at random!

Oddly, I’ve always kinda seen him as looking a bit like Matthew Perry. Definitely a California tan “preppy” look in dress and style. Thin and healthy. Prob shaves his head because he didn’t like how high that hair line was receding. All in all, a good looking guy.
Oh, we’re not talking about Matt Reed?

Oh, I see what you did there, you Tennessee bastard!
Yes, I’m a bald old fuck. But I like the comparison to Matthew Perry (fellow Matt), but I would never be considered “preppy”. My style would, at best, be considered fast casual: shorts and a t-shirt made for work-from-home. I may jam myself into jeans occasionally, but otherwise it’s all comfort, baby.

Also? When the initial post went up, I was like “What do I look like? Seriously?”
So many people call me “Reed” (correct spelling by the way, no “Reid” or any variant) I’m like “Me”! So there was a moment…

Who worked as assistants to Sinnott?* GCD says Dave Hunt assisted Frank Giacoia, Joe Sinnott, Mike Esposito, and Mike Ploog (with background inks) from 1972 to 1978, and that Charles Barnett assisted Herb Trimpe and Joe Sinnott during an unknown time period.
