Recently, I have been making hi-res scans of the Neal Adams pieces I have in my collection, including this:

This piece began life as the back cover for CHARLTON BULLSEYE 1, a fanzine produced by Roger Stern and Bob Layton. Once it had performed its intended function, Neal instructed that it be passed on to me.

Funny thing was, when I first saw it I thought This is pretty poor Neal. Then I realized, No, this is pretty amazing ME!

Neal, drawing characters I had designed, emulated my style--and made it SO MUCH BETTER!!!!

(Upon seeing this piece, Chris Claremont immediately wanted to come up with a story to go with it. Chris, btw, had a habit of referring to the comic in which these characters appeared as DOOMSDAY+4.)

When I first saw this I thought - Wow that's an awesome early John Byrne page!

Without the signature and your background info I would have no clue that was Neal Adams work. I can see a few of his touches here and there but it really is an interesting variation from his normal style.

Seems like Neal gave you a gift beyond the page itself. Nicely done.

Basically, this is how the characters looked in my head!

Bit of history: Joe Gill’s script for the first issue described Kuno, the big guy at center in this picture, as a “Goth”. No reference was included, and in those pre-google days I had no idea where I might find some. So I faked it, based on various movies I had seen. *

Years later, with a wider access to visual data, I realized I had been pretty close!

______

* Most notably Charlton Heston’s THE WAR LORD and Hammer’s THE VIKING QUEEN.

I'm reminded of when you did Red Sonja in Marvel Team-Up and gave her Frank Thorne hair and eyes - it's fun to see one artist tip his hat to another like that.

Now that's something that I never knew before. I wonder if you are perhaps one of the first of your 70's peers to have Neal draw one their creations so early in their careers.

(I'd love to be proven wrong, because now I want to see 70's Neal draw Walt's Manhunter!)

Red Sonja note: Eventually I came to realize her “bikini” was the shredded remains of her original chainmail shirt. But at the point in time when I did that MTU I had not yet figured that out.

Absolutely amazing. Like others, I thought it was your work. Two legends, like chocolate and peanut butter. Thanks for sharing, sir.

I'm so glad Neal came to comic books with all that energy and talent!

Every field of endeavor should be so lucky as to have its own Neal Adams.
