>> Maybe no Dark Phoenix? Maybe a lot less Wolverine. A different Superman reboot for sure. <<

You must regard the 80s in some ways a lot differently from those who are fans of that era in your work, JB.

As much as I am curious to know what bugs you, Mr. Byrne, I suppose it is generally best in life not to dwell on our regrets.

That is, of course, unless you are going to do something wonderfully positive about them...like ELSEWHEN.

Fans can overstep their bounds and I've found that those who do not understand the medium often assign non relatable terms to it. Such as scratchy. I've enjoyed your work in all its forms.

Oh great, now I'm trying to picture an Itchy & Scratchy comic as drawn by JB! I'd hope for a Radioactive Man cross-over story...

You know who was "scratchy"... Frank Robbins! He owns that description for me. Just thinking about some of those Invaders issues make me kind of itchy... but usually I liked his work too, even on that one Daredevil...

I don't recall Robbins inking invaders. Penciling, yes - but inking, no (though I could be wrong!).

Robbins was initially inked by Colletta on Invaders. If ever there were someone to whom the sobriquet 'scratchy' applied, then for me, it was Colletta. By that I don't mean 'bad' - I should be so lucky to have inked as many marvel pages as he! Colletta was fast - ergo 'scratchy'. But inking styles are subjective as are penciling styles.

As a kid I laughed at Robbins' contorted physiology, squeezing full body images into a panel, and his googly-eyed characters. But back then I was also disparaging about Kirby (Gasp! Sacrilege!). Now I look back and re-read both artists' output through different eyes - particularly Kirby, who I now 'totally get' - not only for his art - but also for his unparalleled storytelling, concepts and characters.Shame on my younger self!

All artists and inkers have styles that are subjectively appealing (or not) - and what appeals to us adapts over time and with experience. Sure - I'd have preferred inkers more to my personal taste to have inked all the issues Colletta ever worked on. I'd have preferred John Byrne to have penciled all the original Invaders series - but I got what I got - and have learned to love it.

And hey - at least I got that splendid Baron Blood throwback story in Cap's own series a couple of years later... ;-)

Missed the four year anniversary of the first serialized post of ELSEWHEN a few weeks ago. Man time flies!
So happy that JB decided to take us on this journey with all of these issues. I still go back and re-read episodes and marvel (seriously, no pun intended!) at the artwork! Thanks JB!

Four years!  I reread these frequently and it still seems unbelievable they actually exist.

Many thanks JB, for the pure joy of it all.
