Do you remember why Terry didn’t ink that one issue of UXM he missed
during your run?

Nope. Sorry.

"Fun" story: When I found out Terry would be missing that issue, I asked if I could ink it. Shooter said no, and assigned Ricardo Villamonte--who had just inked an issue of AVENGERS and, being unfamiliar with the X-Men, "fixed" Wolverine, turning him into the Beast. Marie Severin had to step in to restore Logan's face.

None of which would have happened if, you know, I'd inked it myself.

So odd, too, that there were so many JB issues with covers featuring Austin inks on Cockrum art. Mr. Cockrum was great, but I wanted to see JB covers.

Eventually I became one of the go-to guys for covers, so I guess I got better.

If memory serves, the busiest artists for Marvel covers in the 70s and 80s would have included Ron Wilson, Dave Cockrum, John Romita, Gil Kane and Jack Kirby.

In addition to JB I don't recall George Perez doing a lot of his own covers early on either.

Marvel only:

George did the March 1975 cover of Creatures on the Loose #34, which he also did the interior pencils. John did the cover and interior pencils for the October 1976 of Iron Fist #8.

That IF cover was heavily reworked by Romita’s Raiders.
