I like that we get interesting creative insights, such as the on-the-spot design process for the creatures. Today's final panel is the definition of when Wolverine's pupil should show. Time to step away carefully!

The art is good as always but I'm loving the story / dialogue.

I'm a happy man thanks to you JB : I get another few panels more of UXM drawn by you instead of the original penciler, today "the bigwig" and "the tie" panels from Giant Size X-Men !!! Glorious !

JB, your design for Wolverine's costume will ALWAYS be my favorite, but it's cool to see you draw his old costume again, especially with the redesign of the mask, as he was during most of your run on the title.

Thanks, but you KNOW there are people out there complaining “you can see his eyes!”

(In an early issue of LEGENDS there was a scene in which Batman got hit in the face with a bottle of perfume, which shattered, spraying the stinging liquid into his eyes. As a good little art robot I’d drawn what I was asked to draw, even though I assumed those white eyes mean the openings in the mask were covered—something Neal Adams would play to when he showed the eyes as if behind white cloth in tight close-ups. For some reason, tho, in the next panels where I drew Batman with his eyes scrunched up, the colorist made them flesh toned. An obvious mistake nobody bothered to correct. This inspired Tony Isabella to chide me for showing Batman “with his eyes visible”. sigh)

It's weird to me that someone in the profession (i.e. another comic writer) would fail to understand that there appears to be multiple opportunities for the underlying artwork to get screwed up / for the end result to be altered. Like, the Dr Doom splash on FF #247 ("This Land Is Mine!") has a permanent buck tooth because of a....printing press error?

Outwardly I am a average man working at his desk.
Internally I am a 10 year old with a huge grin on his bed surrounded by his comics again.  This issue is GREAT!

•••

In the old days of letterpress printing, it was not uncommon for scraps of paper to detach from the roll and land on the plate, blocking the ink from reaching the actual sheet.

That was what created what I called the “Kukla, Fran and Doom” effect seen on that page.

“THISH LAND ISH MINE!”

At least no one accused me of drawing Doom with buck teeth—tho the Internet didn’t exist in its present form…….

You are one of the few artists to draw Wolverine's eyes for dramatic effect. But only sparingly - each time you have*, I try to imagine the panel without them, and I realize that it just wouldn't look as good. You have great instincts!

*The scenes that I remember off the top of my head:
  • Wolverine in the sewer
  • The "Dirty Harry" bit with the Hellfire Club goon
  • cover of WOLVERINE#17
I'm curious if anyone remembers more!

Anyway, that makes me wonder - the rules for drawing Storm's pupils seem to be much looser than for Wolverine, as established by Dave Cockrum - what's your criteria for deciding whether or not to draw them in a panel?

A quick question:

I was looking over Hulk 181 to see how masterfully and seamlessly you adapted Logan's intro scene and there's a distinct narration that says Logan is 5' 5".

In most of your artwork, Heather is drawn as taller than Logan and a head shorter than Mac.  Does that make her 5' 8" in your estimation?
