Someone posted this on FB without giving any credits so I am unsure if this is an early John Byrne drawing of Iron Fist used in an Ad from Deadly Hands of Kung Fu #17 which came before IF#1 or is this maybe Gil Kane? Anyone know about this Ad?

The shot is from Iron-Fist#2, inks by Frank Chiaramonte.
It appears that Iron-Fist#2 came a couple of months after DHoKF#17, but the art obviously had been available in time for the ad. As for the Marvel Premiere Iron-Fist stories, I think JB only did the last one (#25), just one month before Iron-Fist #1.

Small note on the coloring in that panel. As was all too common, the colorist ignored the explosive effect and gave IF his standard colors--even going so far as to "fix" the dragon brand on his chest, which I had deliberately left open.(Note, too, an example of the strange little mouths I used to draw.)

Yeah, that mouth really stuck out to me. How interesting to find our weird little artistic quirks with some distance.

After I corrected those tiny mouths a number of fans at cons told me they liked them. They took them to be some kind of anime reference. At the time, I was unfamiliar with Japanese animation.

I’m reminded again that Iron Fist and Powerman were put in the same book in order to combine what were thought of as mostly two different sales pools. After the fact it was discovered that sales on IRON FIST were actually ticking upwards, prompting me to say the joined title should have been IRON FIST AND POWERMAN.

It was years before I learned that they did not start out as a duo. It just felt like such a natural pairing that worked.

You are correct. I remembered that the next day. lol
Interesting that JB drew Iron Fist over three different titles.
