Wolverine, Banshee and perhaps even Thunderbird might be given to occasional exclamations in their native languages or dialects, but Colossus, Nightcrawler and Storm were taught English with a quick zap from Xavier.

We've wondered before whether the professor's history indicates he should have a Boston accent, and whether that would come thru in the language lesson, but even without that it seems unlikely that his "pupils" would somehow hand on to exclamations in anything other than English.

I thought this issue was damn near perfect, and then Doom showed up at the
end it turns out this issue is maximum perfection!

Pure Marvel goodness!

Storm/Ororo would regularly make exclamations about a 'goddess'. I guessed Chris Claremont didn't know any Swahili that could serve the same purpose as 'begorah', 'unglablich' or 'sapriste' etc. We're lucky she didn't say 'jambo' to everybody.

Magneto's jewishness does seem to date back to before the movies, but I've gotten so many of the 'Acts Of Venegenace' issues now it's difficult to dig out the one where he flips out at the Red Skull as a Nazi based on it, if it wasn't some other comic from that time they were both in...

I called him Magnus in a margin note in “Days of Future Past”. Didn’t intend it to be his real name.

Coming v. late to the discussion, but just to confirm Magneto's fate as a concentration camp survivor does indeed date back to well before the movies — at least 14 years, in fact.

This is a panel from New Mutants #49, by Chris Claremont/Bret Blevins, published in 1986:

Just deleted a couple of posts that were leading off into major thread drift, looking at elements introduced after I left UNCANNY. Elements, I should add, against which I would have argued most strongly.

Comparing ELSEWHEN to what "really" happened is a rabbit hole down which we have largely avoided plunging, so far, and I think it wise to stay on that course.

As a child I would probably have said my favourite member of Alpha Flight was Sasquatch (incidentally the first I 'met'), but as the years have gone on, Shaman has grown to be possibly my favourite member. Love the way you draw him floating -- there's so much drama on the page where he descends into the pit with the stones. Brilliant depiction of the angles, lighting, textures and body posture.

It was probably a tossup between Puck and Sasquatch for me.

If I could see just one of the two in a new story though... I'd have to go with Judd!

Poor Judd is… well, not dead, but he might as well be. Rarely have I seen a character so relentlessly fuct over. This side of Box, anyway.
