Magneto is German? I was of the impression Chris had made him Scandinavian.

ron: This just occurred to me: Do Doom and Magneto have accents?

***

Andrew: When speaking English, probably, though I'd imagine Doom went to some effort to speak English perfectly.

Regarding Doom's accent, some may remember this from JB's FF 287:

BTW, "He grew up right here in Queens. He never had any trace of an accent ..." -- ha!

Great find, thanks!

With all that Doom is capable of, and all that he has done, it never really registered to me that (arguably) Marvel's greatest villain has no enhanced abilities of his own, though not from lack of trying. Also telling that when he has acquired them, it never sticks.

And I also love that his kingdom stays old school and all the tech is behind the scenes, in contrast to Reed where (mostly) all the tech is up front. But you would think that would follow with his armor, where he wouldn't wear any of it  but the mask when lolly gagging around the castle unless on a  "mission".

An image popped into my head just yesterday of Doom in a tux, still wearing the mask/helmet.

Nowhere to put it.

It occurred to me recently, too, that we’ve all become so fixated on Doom’s destroyed face we tend to forget his whole lab (small as it was) exploded around him, so his entire body should be covered with burns.

In some ways the fans have so overthought something cast in a light fantasy mold... perhaps it's the quality some creators have put into things, but ultimately I don't think a lot of it can hold up under that kind of intense scrutiny. Shouldn't the writers of doctoral thesis on the worlds of Marvel and Star Trek not have gone on to say read English at Oxford or have a dissertation on the works of Herman Melville published by an academic journal rather than another long article delving into the mythic archetypes behind Spider-Man and Peter Parker in the Comics Journal?

Too many fans (fanatics?) and not enough readers enjoying themselves? I really don't ask where Huey, Dewey and the other guy actually came from, but this seems to be the prevailing mentality when it comes to superhero comics. Can't they 'just' be talking ducks too? Trapped in a world we never made, waugh! Except for a John Byrne... he did make it! :^0

I recently read one of those 'Acts Of Vengeances' where Magneto reacts strongly to the Red Skull's Nazi status, so I'm thinking that predates the first X-Men movie.

Is Magneto German? I thought he was but I could easily be mistaken-- it's one of those details that might have come up so long ago, it's lost down the memory hole.
Either that or I probably thought the MU had retconned his origin to align with the X-Men movie from 2000.

My original question about their accents stemmed from my memory of the  emphasis of the new X-Men being intercultural/interracial/international, that they regularly shouted exclamations in their native language (not Storm for  some reason, even though she was partly from an African nation). It was interesting to me that it didn't extend to villains like Magneto or Doom.  < id="protanopia"> < id="deuteranopia"> < id="tritanopia">
