Were you planning to address that scene during your X-Men The Hidden Years run?

••

No. Too much of a STARS WARS retroactive ick factor!

ITEM: I really hate practical costumes, or "real world sensibilities." This is comics, not outside my door. "Why would anyone wear a cape?" "Why would  his collar extend and block his peripheral vision?" "His outfit should be made of armor. Or how else can he take a bullet?" WHO CARES? If you're going to be a real world superhero, go ahead and make it practical (and I'll reference Nite Owl I's considerations in "Behind the Mask" or Adam Savage's real Iron Man  outfit.) I don't CARE if Iron Man's armor shouldn't look so sleek and human shaped with all the gadgets he has... IT JUST IS.

ITEM: Pretty set up page, and I can't help but see the next one... "Face it, tiger eyes! You just hit the jackpot!" WHEEE!

Looks like Scott Summers is about to have his "Face it Tiger. You hit the jackpot!" moment on the next page. Well, I doubt Jean is as forthcoming as Mary Jane, but it is interesting to consider that Scott and Jean are destined for one another regardless of their time line. =)

My formative years Magneto was all post-UNCANNY #150 (and the story that still stands out for me was Magneto vs Red Skull in CAPTAIN AMERICA during "Acts of Vengeance") - but given how different pre-and-post UNCANNY #150 Magneto was, why didn't Claremont just create a new character?

Chris wasn't trying to create a new character. He was trying to recreate an old one: Doctor Doom.

That licence plate seems to appear at the drop of a hat.

The important distinction about Dr. Doom which some people don't seem to realize when comparing Magneto's modern portrayal to his more consistent portrayal, is that there really was very little revisionism done to Dr. Doom.

Within the first couple of years of the character's existence, Doom's creators, Lee and Kirby, introduced Latveria and established Doom as its monarch. He was also developed as having his own code of ethics and honor, even though he was certainly ruthless and did bad things to achieve his goals. Nearly all characters are not fully formed when they start out, but Doom's personality and backstory came fairly early on, and, more importantly, did not contradict anything we had already read about him before that point.

Magneto, as I've pointed out before, was characterized as a truly horrible person with no real honor for nearly two decades before the revelation about his past in a concentration camp, and the rehabilitation of his image. The changes with his character definitely and greatly contradicted his past portrayal through the years. A fan may prefer the earlier version, or prefer the later version, and that's fine, but it's a far stretch to consider that both versions are really the same character.

Peter Martin: "...That licence plate seems to appear at the drop of a hat..."

Only every once in awhile, when a prominent car is shown in a JB illustrated comic. It's like how Sam Raimi puts his old car in each one of his films.

Matt, I understand, but my comment was my own nod at the nod. JB got my reference.

I am loving this realization of including the old idea of the What If...?

Creative Question for our magnanimous and most excellent host:

Are there any specific scenes or dialogue that have stuck with you over the years (when you first envisioned the "What if Magneto formed..." that you are able to now express this this Elsewhen? (and if so, how does it feel to actually accomplish something that has been in your head for so long?)

Or is this entirely revamped from that original idea?
