I didn’t deep dive as far as Matt appears to have done, but I read a lot of Magneto last year as I went through the X-Men issues from the start up to when JB left. Magneto was a complete & utter git. 141-142 had him working with the X-Men & somewhat sympathetic as a character, but everyone was @ their end.150, as Matt says, is the big change - & then God Loves, Man Kills is what I consider the next big step, where he almost makes the leap. & then the Lee Forester issues leading to when he takes over the X- Men, which I just could never get my head around (not as much as Scott shacking up with Emma Frost though, which just pissed me off to no end).

Is Mrs. Grey reaching out to take Magneto's coat, and then he just barges past her? JB sure knows how to script a "jerk".
Scott's reaction is an excellent way to build anticipation for a first glimpse...

Really like this page. I hope we learn why Magneto chose to impersonate Charles--it surely wasn't a random choice. And Scott's initial reaction upon seeing Jean was terrific!

141-142 had him working with the X-Men & somewhat sympathetic as a character…•• Here we see something that became very frustrating when working with Chris. No matter how carefully we (or I) worked out a storyline, if something "off-model" happened as a story point in the middle of the arc, Chris would seize on it, and that would become the model going forward. DAYS OF FUTURE PAST gave us two such instances, as adult Kate, in Kitty's body, has lost he fear of Kurt, and future Magneto has "mellowed" considerably. So when the stories returned to the contemporary timeline, that's how Chris continued to write them. It's much like what happened to Batman after DKR, tho obviously Chris was not involved there.

With JB, even the "quiet" pages are fun to look at!
JB, I end up looking over the way you draw cars, the trees, houses, and backgrounds. I think ELSEWHEN has some of the best drawings of locations and such that you have ever done.

It's an amusing exercise, for me, to compare the work I am doing now to what I did in the Seventies. I had very little in the way of "life experience" then and, frustrating for an artist, very little access to reference. I mostly had to work from memory of what I'd seen on TV and in movies.

James Woodcock: "...I didn’t deep dive as far as Matt appears to have done, but I read a lot of Magneto last year as I went through the X-Men issues from the start up to when JB left..."
Even in "Journey Into Mystery", "The Avengers", "The Defenders", and fighting The Fantastic Four, Inhumans, and Champions, he was always portrayed as that utter git.
One thing, as an aside: In an Avengers story from the early 1970s, Magneto had learned to control people through magnetic manipulation of the iron in their blood running through their brain, or such. He literally controlled them like a puppet! Not long afterwards was the Defenders story with Alpha, who used his power to regress Magneto to infancy. After that got resolved, the mind control powers were dropped and never brought up again. I am glad about that, as it made Magneto too powerful, and was really stretching how his magnetism was used.

Meanwhile...Smug and obviously-past-it "fans" are among my least favorite things. So, THIS was no joy to read, with it's over-abundant snark and unerring ability to Miss The Point. Note the first comment, concerning Wanda's "catsuit". "Didn't last long". Well, as long as that one story needed it to, but don't let such trivial details get in the way of more fanboy ennui. sigh

JB, Were you planning to address that scene during your X-Men The Hidden Years run?
