Hi JB,

What are the necessary ingredients for a a good Fantastic Four story?

All the best for the New Year and thanks for all the entertainment.

Suspense, conflict, resolution. Pretty much true of any story.

Adventure.   Exploration.   Bit of family drama.   Whole lotta fun.

Ben. Johnny. Reed. Sue. Although not every single time. I recall a superb FF story by Mr. Byrne in which NONE of them showed up.

I'm currently enjoying the JB FF run (again) with the second omnibus.

I love the galaxy-spanning epics, but one of my favourite issues is the Human Torch solo in #285 where the little kid sets fire to himself to emulate his idol.

I shouldn't forget #284 either, which is solely responsible for making me actually like the She-Hulk.

What makes a good FF story?

Good storytelling.

••

If only Shooter hadn't forced the Beyonder into it.

If any of you wonder why the doctor is featured so prominently in the front of the issue, then basically disappears, that's why. I was forced to replace her with the Beyonder--even tho Shooter had assured me that the "special nature" of my story would allow me to skip the Cosmic Interference just that once.

(When the issue was cycling 'round for reprinting, I offered to redo the Beyonder pages, restoring my original intent. For FREE. The editor declined my offer.)

I started to read this run some months ago and, just like JB's Superman/Action Comics run, one thing I like is how the villains are portrayed in an interesting way, either scary or in a way that you can unconsciously cheer for them in a way.

Sometimes we took this for granted, but not every writer can do good villains.

Maybe we should create a new topic about what makes a villain good.

One key ingredient?  Familial tension.  Not family dysfunction.

Any issues I've read over the years where they're literally & figuratively at each other's throats just doesn't ring true to me.

Interesting info on FF #285, JB. Much of those Secret Wars II crossovers seemed to be shoehorned in.

Thinking about it, my favourite Alpha Flight issue is the Puck solo story in #5.

General Hospital's loss is our gain!

A real shame Marvel didn't take you up on that offer to redo parts of 285. What a loss! It's not like the original 285 would have disappeared for any fans of the Beyonder out there (should they exist).

Someone who can draw the Thing properly. He's shaped more like a starfish than a human being. He does NOT have a NECK.

JB,

I know you're busy with ELSEWHEN at this time, but have you ever thought about presenting your original version of FF #285 here in the forum?

Thanks
