This has been bugging me for a while but I seem to be hearing it more often lately; the infuriating but often entertaining misuse of the word 'literally'.

Recent Favourites have been:

1) 'Every time I tried wearing high heels I ended up literally breaking my ankle'
2) 'I'm literally on cloud 9, I mean literally over the moon'
3) 'Arsenal just didn't turn up in the final against Chelsea; they literally didn't turn up.'
4) 'I was literally frightened to death'

Apparently, the Keepers of Proper English have given up on this one. For several years, now, it has been acceptable to use “literally” interchangeably with “figuratively”.

I still refuse to do it, tho, unless I’m impersonating Chris Traeger.

Literally one of my pet peeves, as well.

------------

Along with 'should of' instead of 'should have' and 'your' instead of 'you're'

"I still refuse to do it, tho, unless I’m impersonating Chris Traeger."

And even then, it should be pronounced "LIT-trelly."

The overuse of any word really gets my goat (not goad!), the misuse of an overly used word is a double whammy to my brain!

I wonder what that people say when they really mean "literally".

'your' instead of 'you're'
----------
In speech, is there a difference here? Depending on
accent, I would say not

I hate that “unique” has been shifting from “one of a kind” to “unusual.”

...and often gaining, accordingly, the modifier 'very' or 'extremely', which makes no sense for an absolute such as unique.

I hate that “hate” has been so diluted.
