Gordon Somers: Oh and not to forget he can turn in some pretty darn good inking jobs
.....
Totally agreed. Garcia-Lopez inked a couple of storylines that ran in Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight, and both jobs were beautiful. The first was "Venom" over Trevor von Eeden's layouts & Russ Braun's pencils, and the second was "Grimm" over Trevor von Eeden's full pencils. Really incredible stuff.
I had a page of original artwork from "Grimm" for a number of years, and it looked amazing in person. I'm sorry I had to sell it to pay bills. I keep hoping one of these days I'll be able to buy it back. It's one of the few pieces of original art that I genuinely regret selling.

artists such as Esteban Maroto,
====================================================
When I was 11, I picked up "The Atlantis Chronicles" just to have a look through at the Forbidden Planet in Glasgow.
I was instantly taken by Maroto's art. To my shame, I wasn't really following the story, but got all 7 issues for the art at the time.
Long overdue a re-read.

As many of you know, Fred Chamberlain is very good friends with Jose, and thanks to him, I have gotten to know him just a bit myself. He likes my posts on facebook, and he has drawn sketches for my girls. I make sure I see him everytime he's at a con. He's an absolute pleasure. In addition to being one of my favorite cartoonists, he is my all-time favorite Wonder Woman artist, and that's saying something, since my favorite living cartoonist had a three-year run on the book himself.
If you have facebook, you can see some of my photos here.

Peter Martin - that surely looks like Garcia-Lopez art to me. That Supergirl is so good, I didn't notice that it's an outfit she'd never worn until Mr. Byrne's revamp* of her - her skirt is red instead of blue.
I notice that the Superman coin is in the Wonder Woman box. Interesting... :)
I think he brought a certain dynamic art style to DC when it was pretty rare for them. I love that art, and I wish I knew where to get a set of his DC style guides - they'd get a place of honor in my art collection!
Also, as previously noted - his art shines through even on stories that aren't, um, quite so attractive as the art. Of course, he has nothing to do with that. It seems he is a full blown professional, no matter what the job. And I would love to see him on the Avengers, or maybe even the Fantastic Four. I'm curious to see how he'd treat the Thing.
*Or whatever phrase is appropriate, Mr. Byrne - no insult intended.

Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez drew the most memorable Superman story I've ever read.
SUPERMAN #301 - "Solomon Grundy Wins On A Monday!"
Don't laugh. It's a wacky story, like many of the old Superman tales, but it's stuck with me for decades.

Wallace, that's the book I had him sign for me! So I'm laughing at the coincidence. Cool.

If you want more wacky stuff check out Superman 307 - 309 by Gerry Conway and Jose Luis Garcia Lopez subtitled "Krypton -- No More!"
The broad brush strokes are:
- Superman wages a war on pollution
- Supergirl reveals there never was a Krypton and Superman and her are both mutants from Earth.
- Superman battles Protector a villain fueled by pollution from Earth, and his ally Radion who wants to radiate the world.
- Superman battles an alien armada trying to invade the planet Xonn.
- Superman goes blind as a result of exposure to an orange sun.

So great. I've had the great honor of getting to write the text for a few children's books that used a lot of JLGL's licensing artwork. I remember getting the files of what I was going to get to work with -- page after page of beautiful, iconic work. Every character had the purity of its essence captured perfectly. My publisher told me about the day JLGL actually visited their offices and it was like the scene in Zoe's Extraordinary Playlist where the legendary designer visits the office and all the programmers start singing "Jesus Christ Superstar."
