Also - who knew Kitty's powers could be this horrific? I think I'd rather get chopped up by Wolverine or hit by Storm's lightning than half phased into a wall and choking to death.

Right from the start, I wanted to play up the contrast of sweet little innocent Kitty and the very nasty things she could potentially do with her powers. Alas, I did not get the chance to do so -- until now.

Are we seeing the birth of the "mutie go home" movement? One of the things that appealed to me in the early years of the X-Men was that they defended people despite the opinions held by those people. Very much like the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment in the Civil War, the Tuskegee Airmen in or 442nd Infantry Regiment in WW2. Doing what is right is always heroic, but sometimes seems more interesting when the protected are ignorant. This latest twist, that innocent people near the X-Men are subject to harm by sheer proximity, is something I didn't consider and I look forward to seeing where it leads.
On the view count, the main forum's "presidential" thread is over 88K so I wonder if it is a counter roll over issue. I don't remember the Issue 2 thread getting over 40K. It must be a setting of some kind, but I can't imagine what at this point. Are any threads in any other forums on the JBF exhibiting this kind of issue?

Prejudice is in full swing during this story and throughout the X-Men's history. "Birth" is the wrong word. The public hatred of mutants did seem to fade for me as a reader until the Morlocks were introduced. This is the first time I've seen anyone on the team admit their presence could be detrimental.

Damn! What an issue!
Addressing civilian death in this way gives this story
weight and significance - both in the X-Men's reaction and
that of the townspeople. Pitch perfect - just like the
best of Marvel at its height.

Third panel on that penultimate page with the close-up on Ororo is an all-timer. Subtle shades of exhaustion, resignation, and regret.

I loved Kitty facial expressions during all the fight. You can see she's a teenager stuck in the middle of a big fight with a killing machine!

Technical question. Your perspective grids. Drawn manually with a straight edge, or some type of underlay/overlay on the computer? Always admired how you defined the "space" on the page. Keeps everything consistent and believable. As believable as mutant powers can get anyway ;)

I use a drafting machine to draw my grids. They are intended for drawing parallel lines, but since the arms rotate on a central hub, they are ideal for creating forced perspectives.

What Kitty has done to the Sentinel and Wolvie finishes is something similar at what Claremont did with Cat (alternate Kitty) to alternate Nightcrawler in the Magik LS #2 and also it was done by the Ghost to the Spymaster in Iron Man #220.
