Claremont used the “by” tag with JRjr, too.

“By Chris Claremont and John Romita, Jr.”
“By Chris Claremont and Jim Lee”

I wonder how Chris’ handling of Logan/Jean would look thru the eyes of the #MeToo movement.

"I spent a lot of my time on UNCANNY reminding Chris the
book was about mutants, not aliens, demons and vampires"

As a kid, that's what made me stop reading Uncanny. The
outer space stuff didn't seem like X-Men-type stuff.

Wolverine, post JB, was a bully and sexual harasser. Whatever CC's intentions, he came across as a creepy stalker to me.  It's also resembles animal behavior, such as killing the alpha male (Cyclops) and taking the alpha female (Jean) as his own.  It reduces Jean to property.  So, I shrugged and stopped buying the book.  YMMV.

Barry Windsor-Smith had plotting input into Uncanny X-Men #186,198 & 205. The credits for #186 say "script - story - pencils". #198 ambiguously says "produced by Chris Claremont and Barry Windsor-Smith." #205 says "Chris Claremont story script, Barry Windsor-Smith story art & color."

No argument that the direct market boosted UXM sales, but there could still only be one top-selling title.

Claremont was a singular voice. His writing had many strengths, but clearly was not without its flaws and having a strong creative partner to keep him focussed on the core of  the title was a big benefit. Yes, the space pirates, and fuzzy elves and sorcerers were wrong turns (I'm inclined to forgive the backward-looks to Phoenix), but you only have to look at the X-Men after he left to see how he was net a benefit to the title.
