Awards or no awards, I don't think any better superhero comic was being published in the late '70s than THE UNCANNY X-MEN. Even if Claremont's dialogue was often going against JB's intentions, still, was there anything better than the CC/JB X-MEN being published by the Big Two in, say, 1979?
(I realize this is a loaded question to ask on The John Byrne Forum but honestly, I think about it, and I don't think there was any better-written superhero title being published at that time.)

I finally had time to catch Part 2 of the interview today, and I found it as enjoyable as the first. Well done, Mike Avila, and thanks, JB, for giving him more of your time!

Love seeing fellow pros rave about JB.•• I could have lived without McFarlane's snarky reinforcement of the myth of Erik Larson and me engaging in "flame wars". Oh, well! At least I have the power to prevent the Toddler dying "a happy artist".

JB just curious, did Todd or any of the Image founders try to "recruit" you inbetween Namor/Iron Man and your move to Dark Horse?

For some reason, I was thinking that the whole Image thing happened at the same time that JB and Frank Miller and Mike Mignola were doing the creator owned Legend imprint at Dark Horse but I guess that was a little later.

We were actually inspired by Image. A bit too much, as it turned out.

From the Comments:“Byrne says he’s a comics fan, but he’s not.He WAS a comics fan. He hasn’t read any new comics in many years, and he now just complains constantly about what people tell him is happening in comics...” I didn’t realize being a fan meant having to embrace EVERYTHING. Anyway, this guy misses the rather important point that I am a fan of the MEDIUM. The FORM, if not always the content.

Yeah, that is not a sensible comment. If I listen to classical music, opera, 70s, 80s and 90s rock, film scores, jazz records, but don't listen to the current chart hits, that doesn't mean I don't like music.
