BTW -- screen name "Statutory Grape"? A play on words based on the sexual molestation of underage girls?

Time for another Flood!!

That new piece is excellent!  A much deeper dive into the work than the previous clip.  Really well done interview, and I like how they showed JB’s work pretty extensively.

I am glad you mentioned OMAC - that really is an amazing work.

JB, I'm fascinated by the way you hold the pencil when the video shows you drawing (i.e., underneath the index finger as opposed to over it).  Is that the grip you use all the time?

••

You should have heard me last weekend! I had a cold, and after a couple of days of coughing I had my Barry White voice on!

sigh

From the comments:

“I love John Byrne but he needs to give credit to Dave Cockrum & Mike Grell who he CLEARLY watched, studied & emulated. It is beyond obvious in his character creations. Especially Dave, who died in 2006, had that not occurred this would be another story based on another artist. John started as his inker I believe. John went on to create characters & designs that were direct emulations of Dave's. The costumes & powers, if not both, show one or the other are clear ...”

Another case of mistaken identity? When have I ever missed an opportunity to praise and credit Dave? But Grell? I don’t mention him for the simple reason he has no influence on my work. Rather, he and I SHARE an influence: Neal Adams.

Plus, I did not “start” as Dave’s inker—or anyone elses!!

But there I go clouding the issue with facts, again.

Thanks for taking the time to be interviewed JB, it seemed a very easy-going and natural process. I enjoyed the video, already looking forward to the next one :)

When I open up a comic with JB's art, it almost instantly transports me to another place... there's such a wonderfully lush, lively, plausible world on those pages that frankly I don't care whose style influenced you, the result is pretty unique.

Negative comments on YouTube are like holes in donuts - it wouldn't be YouTube if there weren't a few malcontents ready to criticize anything and everything, facts be damned.

But that person loves you. :^)

I guess you can't choose your fans, just like you can't choose your family. There's probably an ancient Chinese curse that covers this somewhere.

When my boyfriend gets that Barry White voice I go a bit weird, but he's sick then and doesn't want to know, another one of those little tortures of the universe. "Oooh baybeee, that voice." :^D "Snerffle, wha? Uh I need a kleenex and some aspirin, can you...? Caff caff, wheeze! Groooaaan." :^(

I accept the fact that fans—in whatever field—will always be a source of negativity. But is it really too much to ask that they get their facts straight?

And...

“I left a comment yesterday but a friend told me they couldn't find it. I looked and it was here. Then I signed out and suddenly I couldn't find my comment. It's as if someone at SyFy Wire was afraid of people knowing John Byrne likes dating teenagers. He said it on his website. He doesn't care if people know, why do you?”

Uhm... No. At least, not since I was a teenager. We’re just launching into full on lies now, is that it?

Now, this exchange as some attempts to correct the guy accusing me of not giving Cockrum enough credit:

—————————

Person A: He has given tons of credit to Cockrum, more than necessary frankly. Grell is irrelevant. Byrne never inked Cockrum. You really should stick with facts, not assumptions.

Original Poster: I guess I have missed that credit given although it certainly does not appear here & who are you to say how much should be given exactly?! Mistakenly, I was thinking of Terry Austin as both of their inker's. I stand happily corrected on that matter. Thank you. Brw, if you're not on his payroll...calm it down. I don't require you to instruct me on how to react or respond. Take care.

———————————

Somebody REALLY doesn’t like being corrected!! So I probably shouldn’t mention that Terry didn’t start out inking Cockum either.

Seems like the guy’s big beef is that I didn’t credit Dave and Grell in this interview.. Which leaves me wondering what the context would be.

Odds that this guy will just quit while he’s behind?
