I wonder where this first appeared. It looks like the kind of thing that would have appeared in OHOTMU, but I *think* I bought every issue of that - and don't recall that page appearing.

I wish I could credit someone, but I found it here:

I wouldn't call too many of those really representative.

To be honest, #4 and #9 were new to me. Can't recall seeing those.

Hmmmm. I'd swear that's from a Marvel Age issue. They used to do face comparisons of characters as a regular feature. Early 90s obviously based on the "newer" art styles featured.

A lot of people don't remember or simply don't know that Steve Ditko did the final issue of the Hulk's original run (#6) and eight issues of TALES TO ASTONISH (#60-67).  His major contribution was the design of The Leader. I've known for decades not only because Hulk is one of my favorites, but I had a TPB collecting Ditko's run that was published in 1978.  In fact, here are scans of it I did just this morning.  Don't touch.  Ink is still wet...

$7.95 for a 253 page book was a lot for a kid 40 years ago!

Here's the page introducing the TALES TO ASTONISH run:

No mention of Ditko on the cover, and none of his art.

sigh

I wasn't clear on the collection and what it compiled. It's not just Ditko's run but of the first four issues of the original run (Kirby) as well as several TALES TO ASTONISH issues after Ditko that also featured Kirby as well as Gil Kane.  Point taken in that none of them are mentioned on the cover nor is any of their art used.

I wouldn't call the Marvel Age page above an "evolution" in anything except certain artists' approach to the character. It does make me wonder, though...

Prior to this panel appearing in MTIO #50, written and penciled by JB, was there any acknowledgement in the comics that the changes we, the readers, were seeing were actually taking place in the reality of the characters...? Had there been any mention of a gray Hulk before this comic showed up in early 1979?

Yes, I know the Hulk was colored gray in his first issue and green thereafter due to the capabilities and limitations of technology at the time, but had there been any on-panel acknowledgements of the shift in color or did MTIO #50 introduce the idea that the characters were in fact changing over time?

For fun, to honor the recent passing of Steve Ditko, and for those who've never seen the Leader's original origin, here are the first three pages of TALES TO ASTONISH #63 scanned from the same TBP:

Thanks for sharing those, Matt. Previously, I'd only seen black and white reprints (MIGHTY WORLD OF MARVEL, I think).
