I really have no feelings about the comic version of Thanos, one way or another. Probably read a total of one comic with him in ever, excluding OHOTMU. The Infinity Gauntlet storyline was going on when I still collected comics, but I steered clear. But, I thought the character depicted by Marvel Studios in Infinity War was memorable, almost monumental. I think it exceeded anything we've seen from a villain in a super-hero film before.

Kirby gave DC what was potentially the greatest villain ever. One part Doctor
Doom, one part Galactus, with maybe a hint of Dormammu mixed in.
And DC blew it. They turned Darkseid into a punching bag. "Oooh, look! MY
character is so cool he beat up Darkseid!"

I-_______
I can't think of anyone who turned Darkseid into a punching bag. Who are you
thinking of John?

I recently read the Complete Collection trades of Jim Starlin’s runs on WARLOCK and CAPTAIN MARVEL (which contain the entire Thanos storyline prior to THE INFINITY GAUNTLET), and enjoyed them quite a bit.

Still haven’t gotten round to reading the collected editions of Kirby’s FOURTH WORLD material, dagnabbit!

I’ll just sit quietly in the corner and be ashamed, now...

Greg, it is so worth it. If reading all 50 issues seems too daunting, the individual titles are mostly self-contained. NEW GODS 1-11 is a pretty satisfying read; of the top of my head I can think of a single panel in those comics that absolutely depends on familiarity with one of the other books.

Yep.  DC has most recently marketed them as a "saga" but there is no connection between the stories in Kirby's Mister Miracle, New Gods, Forever People and Jimmy Olsen, aside from the fact that they encompass a shared universe.  There are no overlapping storylines.  There's almost no crossover of characters.  Each title is self contained.

@Peter

I’m with you on the MCU Thanos.  That guy was intense!  And about as fully fleshed out as a CGI character can be.  Josh Brolin did a fantastic job as Thanos.  And the character is STILL being impactful even outside Infinity War.

Paul Kimball: I’m not sure who JB is specifically thinking of, but I recall
Dan Jurgens’ Doomsday beating up Darkseid at least once.
