If they reprint stuff from the 60's and 70's I might be a little interested. ------------------------------------------------------------ ---------------------------------- Me too but that would be missing the point they are not marketing what would be interesting to 40- 50 years old they are marketing for the 6-12-year-old crowd or at least they should be. get them hooked when they are young and you will have them hooked for life.

How much is DC currently producing that would be suitable for the 6-12 age range?

I don't think they were producing much for the 6-12 age range in the seventies but at least there was the dreaded comics code that kept them from going into murky areas. what the comics industry should not be doing is writing for 40 year olds . Like the spinner rack says Hey kids comics

My LCS is pretty excited about this. They believe that any extra exposure to comic books is going to be good for business. ••
Give them my compliments. That's a far cry from those retailers of the past few decades who cried foul over anything that might threaten their monopoly.
Kudos! ***************************** This was the path my little life took...I had a regular circuit of 7-11's and drug stores as my primary source, then stumbled upon the early generation of LCS as a "bonus" for things I couldn't find on the racks. Ah...good times. I think this is a great idea.

The Direct Sales market was the invention of the late Phil Seuling, a dealer. The idea was that dealers -- no retailers, yet -- could buy non-returnable comics at a discount, and thus maintain their stock of back issues. In other words, the DSM was intended to be an aftermarket, not the only market.

Interesting to note, the number of copies of these Wal-Mart volumes is causing changes in the production of the monthlies. It's my understanding that DC will be going to a flat stock paper instead of gloss thT has been the norm for some time. DC is also looking to move away from the 2.99 books to the 3.99 cover price. Word is, they are going back to 22 pages so they can still maintain that they are a better value than Marvel.

Marvel does 22 pages all along. It looks like marvel is trying to do more 5.99 books with back up stories.

That would instantly reduce my small number of Marvel purchase to zero.

Good luck trying to find out which WALMART stores are participating in the launch. I've tried some searches on walmart.com and, so far, nothing is turning up.

I wonder if these new 100pagers could also compete with those thick Japanese comics I've seen in supermarkets.
I have fond memories of the '70s DC 100 page giants too. As a little kid in the early '70s I remember really liking Plop, Shazam and Supergirl. I'd say they were all very little kid friendly.
Some comic publishers really put themselves in a ghetto with the specialist shops. I understand how it happened, the security of pre-orders or non-returnable sales, the reactiveness to quality if not variety in content. I think in England the paper shops and newsstands took a lot more interest in their stock while here in America comics were seen as interchangeable bales by most. You could have the newsagents in the UK reserve your weekly or monthly or whatever, but here you had to visit several places and hope you got the issues you wanted. There may have been more care in the early days of the '30s-'40s from some sellers of comics in America, when 10 cent items were worth their while whereas later they made more on paperbacks and just about every other kind of magazine.
I'm glad they keep trying lately to get new readers, there won't be many long time readers in the future if there aren't more new ones now.

But the next big question is:
Will (or do) kids even read comic books anymore?
