I really like Cliff Chiang's redesign of Orion's outfit.

John B. -- SWORD OF THE ATOM "de-uniqued" him? At the time (and now too, I guess), I thought it did the opposite. Instead of him being another shrinker (like Doll Man and Ant-Man--hmm...all in blue and red even) who couldn't carry his own series for very long, his power led him to an interesting new environment and raison d'etre...••• A six inch guy living among a RACE of six inch guys. By you this doesn't de-unique him?

Frank Miller's "DK2" had a good moment in it (Yes, really!) where the Atom became a towering giant — while saving the bottled city of Kandor from a great menace.

Derek R. - that outfit is nice, and would look good on a lot of other characters (perhaps Cyclops, for example.)
But I just can't imagine a New God in a leather jacket and slacks. This might be a situation where context is critical.

Orion has gone back to his original design, last I knew.
JB said:
"We'll have to agree to disagree. I thought the whole thing was symptomatic of DC's compulsion to de-unique their characters. (A failing that showed up right away in the new ATOM series I was asked to illustrate.)"
It's just a DC thing. It doesn't bug me as long as the characters with the same powers have wildly divergent personalities. Which they often do.
Since Ray Palmer and Ryan Choi are both still around (Ryan is NOT DEAD, thank god), I'm still waiting for a series starring both of them titled -- what else? -- THE ATOMS. That would be fun.

Me: I love the choice to make his soles white too.•• JB: More of an absence of choice. Really no other way I could have handled it.
**** I realize it was the only way to show his feet, but from an artistic standpoint it absolutely works. I would bet a lot of folks picked this book up just for the cover back then. It's one of my favorite covers ever. Also really enjoyed the black and white Aurora Alpha Flight cover. Which reminds me, that's another alternate costume I absolutely loved. Aurora was already the sexiest woman in comics, but after her new costume and hair do she somehow became even more gorgeous. And I say that as someone who prefers long hair on women.

I would completely agree that Aurora's hair cut made her more attractive. And that is peculiar, because, like you, Shane, I prefer women with longer hair normally.
I've been racking my brain for an answer to this thread, but I'm struggling to come up with anything better than Aurora's costume (which totally worked) and Iron Man's silver centurion armour (which I digged at the time, but is definitely inferior to the classic golden avenger armour).

My research shows the bare legged Colossal Boy costume be attributed to Mike Grell.

Oops! Well, actually that makes sense! Cockrum designs great costumes and Grell gives people bare legs (and arms, and waists, and...).
However, I do seem to recall there was an earlier Cockrum attempt that didn't quite work, and so we soon got the one shown above.
Edited to add-- I found it! Yeah, this was not Cockrum's best. I'm glad he took another shot at it.

"Incidentally, that open top look for the mask originated in a FLASH GORDON story by Alex Raymond. Flash and the gang were having an underwater adventure, and the headgear was to equalize pressure in their ears."

I love coming here and learning things like this.

It might not be a huge difference but I like the Dark phoenix costume.
