Is there a modern incarnation of the Defenders? If so, I think some superheroes would be better suited to that 'team' (who, if memory serves me right, were a loose alliance that came together as and when needed).

The current Defenders are the characters from the Netflix series. Starting in June 2017, they came out with a comic version.

The main motivation behind the modern day Avengers Line-ups seems to be as a kind of synergy with the movies and TV series. So most Marvel character who either has appeared or will appear in a live action movie or TV series will be made a member of the Avengers.
