Fair point, Andy, but superheroes have made a career out of beating opponents, heroic or evil, that are stronger.

If Batman can defeat Superman, then all bets are off.

It comes down to the story. "On any given day---"

However, to play along, I'm going to go with Spider-man.

Joining in on the validation, I feel that if he has to go through Batman to save his Aunt...well, sorry Bruce will wake up dangling from webbing at some point later that evening.

And the deification of Batman continues....

Giving the edge to Batman because of his cunning and smarts is one thing.  Ignoring that Spider-Man is also pretty damn smart and prone to coming up with some clever gadgets of his own as well is ‘criminal’.

Give Batman all the gadget he needs...but assume Spider-Man won’t come up with gadgets of his own?  BAH!

Assume Batman can/will plan for Spider-Man but Spider-Man won’t plan for Batman?  FEH!

I give this one to Spider-Man in straight up fight.  Stronger.  Faster. Spider-Sense.  Wall Crawling.  Web-Shooting (of various types).

I give Batman the clear advantage of age and experience (assuming Batman is and adult in his 30’s and Spider-Man is in his late teens/early 20’s as I always think of them).  But thats it.  Spider-Man can match or exceed Batman in all other measurables....except bank account.

No deification of Batman, just some fun and thoughtful replies, David. :)

I like Batman, he's my second favourite superhero. But I am honest about him. He wouldn't defeat Juggernaut. Or Thor. To name two...

I dunno Robbie, we are all a creative bunch I am pretty sure a convincing enough scenario could be contrived to fulfill both of those.

Comics are great for the fact that a character like Batman (rich person with a lot of training and resources) can plausibly take on Superman (read: A God).

On any given day one character should conceivably be able to win against any other. The fun is in watching 'how' it transpires;)

If they clash unexpectedly, my opinion is that Spider-Man wins. He has several advantages: strength, agility, spider sense, spider webs that can hold the Hulk (briefly), and an intellect on par with Batman's. Yes, Batman has a utility belt full of all-purpose gadgets and can adapt to pretty much any situation, but there are some fights that are just not going to go your way.

Without some advance preparation, at which he excels, Batman's best bet is to get away from Spider-Man as fast as he can.

True, Darren, and it's a lot of fun, but there are some scenarios I cannot envision. Robin and Speedy alone against Asgard's Destroyer? I can't see a way for the heroes to prevail against that. ;-)

The "separate universes" was and is fanboy twaddle.

I'm sure you're referring to AVENGERS/JLA. I saw it as an homage to the old JLA/JSA Earth-One/Earth-Two stories. I'm very, very sure that's what Kurt Busiek intended.

On their journey to face the Destroyer, the boys discover and don ancient
Asgardian armor which imbues them with power that rivals Odin's own godly
might!

Wallace... that's a very interesting idea. But then, we kinda lose Robin and Speedy, no? Sort of a (literal) deux ex machina.

Spider-Man.

His greatest power is overcoming the odds.
