Why I found it irksome in SMALLVILLE is because some episodes were "Kryptonite freak of the week" stories, often to the detriment of other arcs/stories.

Less is often more, eh?

There was an in-story explanation given that the space warp Kal-El's rocket opened inadvertently pulled through a great amount of kryptonite, directing it towards Earth.

As for Smallville, the meteor storm was depicted and showed a lot of the stuff falling all over town. They did set the stage for kryptonite being plentiful. "Freak of the Week" was built into the concept of the show from the beginning.

"Did you ever notice how many times the X-Files fell back on aliens as a storytelling device? I mean, okay, every once in a while, sure, if you have to, but it's as if the writers were just hooked on aliens or something..."
