Maybe modern readers don't like that he doesn't exaggerate muscles (and other attributes) to extremes like some of the younger artists
My father is the same age and works and does a couple of hours live per week as a musician. Keeping active is probably the reason... I make myself do lots of knee bends every day and stuff like that if I'm otherwise not doing anything. You don't want to be like Don Newton or Gene Day. Also diet, not smoking etc., though there's not a lot you can do about heredity of course.
