I'm not a fan of his writing....but his art is fantastic. New, old,and everything in between.

One of the first comics I owned was when Batman fought Ras Al Ghul, a sword fight in the desert. I "owned" it because my Dad bought it at 7-11 and passed it to me after he read it. I was 5 at the time. Sure wish I had that early collection....sigh.

So anyway, I was trying to Google early Adams versus modern Adams, and all I found was one awesome work after another, regardless of when he drew it.

I think Neal is as awesome as he wants to be in that moment.

My older brother had some Adams Deadman comic, and looking at it as a little kid I didn't know where to start. I was used to mostly '50s reprints of Disney and Shazam, and Kurt Schaffenberger Supergirl though. But I did look at it, there was nothing else like it. Something else he (my brother) had, it might have been a Blackhawk, seemed to me like it was sort of meant to be real but I figured out it really wasn't and that it wasn't fooling me, but Neal Adams pretty much was real. Who else could've drawn Muhammed Ali?

Great story Eric, it's cool that so many of the old pros would do stuff like that. I saw Dick Giordano giving people on the spot art lessons about proportions, and Mark Evanier pulling out Dan Spiegel pages to explain inking to someone.

I enjoy Mr. Adams’ old Batman, Deadman and Green Lantern/Green
Arrow stuff more than his current work, but am still impressed by his
current drawing skills.

All I'm gonna say is "Superman vs. Muhammad Ali." The story is goofy as hell. But the artwork...superhero comics artwork doesn't get any better than what's in-between those covers.

All hail Neal Adams.

I guess my question was confusing. Not whether we like Neal or not - you'd have to be a bit silly not to like his work - but more what he has been since say 1980.

I'd say my general thoughts are:

Old Neal (pre 1980)

Brilliant artist
Revolutionized comic book art
Brought realism to comics
Responsible for some of the best stuff 1960s/1970s
Often imitated, beloved by many, pioneer

Later Neal (1980-current)

Still better than most
Not quite what he was
Motivated by money?
Less dynamic art style
Even more photo reference
Lazier looking drawing
Draws women less like real women but comic book sex objects
Pre penciled or copied art?

Not disputing Neal's contribution to comics and I said, definitely one of my all-time favorite comic artists, but seems nowadays more about churning out product to make money than the brilliant artist who burst on the scene many decades ago. And there's nothing wrong with that - he's entitled. He did his part. Just noticing and wondering if anyone here has noticed a change as well.

For my answer, I understood what you were asking. My answer still stands - he hasn't slipped and is as good as he ever was.

What do you mean by:
Lazier looking drawing (implies it was always lazy looking)
Pre penciled or copied art?

Some fairly recent samples of his work:

I've always like Neal's work and still do. He is scheduled to attend the Calgary Expo this year. He is very industrious for a man of 76.

Neal Adams' body of work is AMAZING. I see so much to study every time I browse thru his pages from BATMAN, BRAVE and the BOLD, X-MEN, and AVENGERS.

Still,I'll always be sentimental to Adams' Batman-

You can recognize a lot of celebs in the crowd of that Ali vs. Superman book, even Donny & Marie (a rare skill)...

This a favorite of mine...

•••

There's something vaguely cosmic about Neal being in Calgary, the city where my youthful self spent so many years trying to BE Neal.

Robert Shepherd -  I see Neal's recent work constantly denigrated on other comic book forums I belong to and it amazes me that they're bashing a 76 year old man who in my humble opinion is still producing extremely high quality work.

Not to mention a convention schedule that would wear out most people half his age.
