Thanks, Eric, I'll have a read. Just wondering how often comic companies will want to keep "reinventing the wheel".

It strikes me as... interesting that Bendis's intro miniseries will be called MAN OF STEEL.

I would prefer more newer stories than revamps and origins.
There must be many kinds of comic encounters that have never been done (or rarely done), e.g. Robin VS Man-Bat, Juggernaut VS Fantastic Four, Juggernaut VS Destroyer, etc.
But it seems many publishers do want to keep revisiting a well with "Year Zero" or something. It is wrong of me to judge Bendis' work, but surely everyone knows Superman's origins/early years by now?

After a while, there's no real way to get any juice out of a reboot, relaunch or restart. Slapping a #1 on something that readers will soon decide is "same old stuff" won't cut it.
But it's hard to know what to do. Companies try to innovate and give readers new things, but readership often isn't there. And so they fall back on the same old tricks, with diminishing returns. Eventually there won't be any bump at all from "an exciting new direction!" for a publisher.
FWIW, I'd love to see some mixing and matching of heroes and villains. I'm just doubtful that that will do much to reignite readers' enthusiasm beyond the odd story or two.

And I agree, it's long past time to get away from retelling an origin.

True.
I wouldn't want to overdo the idea, but I think there is so much potential for new encounters. I'd love to see Bruce Banner and Curt Connors attempting to help each other out with their problems (perhaps based on them discovering some new research). And then we could have a *short* Hulk/Lizard encounter.
I like our host's Superman/Joker encounter from 1987. Brains VS Brawn! I'd like to see the Riddler in Metropolis.
I'd love to see whether the Crimson Gem of Cytorrak is more powerful than Asgardian armour on the Destroyer. There are so many things I'd like to see. They are personal to me, of course, but let's be honest: no matter what your interests are, what would you be more enthusiastic about? A Juggernaut VS Destroyer one-shot or a "Year Zero" retelling for any number of heroes?
