For me, it's about balance.

I watched BLADE RUNNER for the first time on Sunday. Bleak stuff. So this week's film will probably be something like GODZILLA VS THE SMOG MONSTER.

Same with comics. I don't mind something dark, gritty, profound, etc. But to balance that out, I want something quirky, light, etc.

At times, it's felt like the Big Two were 95% dark/gritty, 5% light/quirky.

The PLASTIC MAN issues drawn by Ramona Fradon could certainly be
described as quirky. They're also well-drawn and a lot of fun! In fact, I haven't
enjoyed the character as much in any other stories.

I often wonder how quirky Marvel might have been had it "arrived" a decade earlier.

I like Marvel tales from the 60s, but it was very much grounded (not a criticism!). Had Spider-Man or Daredevil debuted in 1950-53, would we have seen tales such as Peter Parker turned into an alien or Foggy Nelson drinking a potion that turns him into a werewolf?

Those bizarre 50s tales I've been reading have been a lot of fun.
