DC did do a FF homage in the BATMAN BEYOND animated series, called "The Terrific Trio":

Seem to recall Metamorpho and Plastic Man meeting in an old issue of The Brave and the Bold, and not having a good first impression of each other.

Slightly off topic but this was mentioned upthread. How in the world could MARVEL get away with Hyperion/Nighthawk and Squadron Supreme ??? At least these DC characters already existed and even predated the FF...

It was kind of a case of a joke that went too far. The first Squadron story was just meant as a bit of fun. I'm sure Marvel was braced for the Cease and Desist letters from DC's lawyers. When none came, they did it again. And again. And eventually any case DC might have made was worn too thin to be practical.

Does make me wonder how some things are subject to legal action whilst others aren't. Captain Marvel is only superficially similar to Superman (in my opinion!), but DC initiated legal action against Fawcett; yet USAgent seems very similar to Judge Dredd, and has a similar temperament, yet no legal action has been forthcoming (not saying I desire to see legal action, just stating facts).

And then World Championship Wrestling got a letter from Marvel when a wrestler called Arachnaman appeared...

On this subject, it's an odd mix, but sometimes something different is good.

The other examples cited in this thread were all homages or knockoffs to currently being published characters.

This is slightly different.  This is Marvel cancelling Fantastic Four due to their issues with Fox for several years, and DC stepping in and saying, "Well, if you aren't gonna publish it, we will!"

I mean, its the Terrifics, led by Mr. Terrific.  And some of the advertising is already referring to them as the Terrific Tetrad.

I'm assuming the black and white uniforms are to match Mr. Terrific's.

Putting Metamorphic and Plastic Man on the same team seems odd to me.

The uniforms? Ummm… No.

That first art sample? Absolutely not.

I'll pass..

Didn't DC do a similar "Squadron Supreme" riff on Marvel characters, too? I
know Freedom Fighters and Invaders also did something similar, each riffing on
the other group for a couple of issues.

I remember reading an article on DC's riffs on Marvel characters and I was surprised--the connections were almost unrcognizable!  I think there have been some post-CRISIS attempts at infusing some long-standing characters with some "Marvel-ness"--Spider-Man star creators Len Wein and Ross Andru did a stint on BLUE BEETLE, for example; and some attempts have been made to "Wolverine-ize" Hawkman and Timberwolf--none of which really worked.

Alan Moore and Image did some very entertaining riffs on 60's-era Marvels with their mini-series "1963."  You could say that all the early Image books were riffs on Marvels, with the big-name creators suddenly faced with the freedom to do whatever they wanted...ended up doing alternate versions of the books they just left!

My examples:
Dale Keown did the Hulk-like PITT
Erik Larsen did the Hulk-like SAVAGE DRAGON
Jim Lee did the X-Men-like WILDCATS
Marc Silvestri did the X-Men-like CYBER FORCE
Todd MacFarlane did SPAWN, with some striking visual similarities to Spider-Man
Rob Liefeld did the Avengers-like YOUNGBLOOD

So, it CAN be done, but it doesn't look like DC does it too often (or well).

DC did the Heroes of Angor: Silver Sorceress (Scarlet Witch), Blue Jay (Yellowjacket), Wandjina (Thor) and Jack B. Quick (Quicksilver) in JLofA #87. Kind of an odd mix to me. Not sure why DC didn't go for "The Big Guns" like Marvel did with the SS.

Both stories were released the same month. So I assume Mike Friedrich and Roy Thomas planned it together.

I find it odd that they haven't even attempted to put in a Human Torch corollary.

Personally, if I were trying to do at FF pastiche with DC properties, I would go with the Freedom Fighters. The Ray, the Human Bomb and Phantom Lady are reasonably close to Johnny, Ben and Sue already.

Or I might just swipe JB's idea to swap in the Legionnaires.

Wasn't the original Doom Patrol DC trying to do the Fantastic Four?

When I first read the Squadron Sinister's first appearance (reprinted in Marvel Super Action) I already knew of Nighthawk, but never connected him to Batman, nor did I think that it was the same Nighthawk as in Defenders.  Whizzer didn't read "Flash" to me because there are so many super-speedsters (Including the Whizzer that was in the first Avengers comic I ever read). I didn't connect Doctor Spectrum to Green Lantern...maybe if he had a ring I would have seen it.  But Hyperion was totally Superman!

I think I really "got it" when the Squadron Supreme appeared in Defenders.
