If someone gave me the keys to either kingdom, Marvel or DC, I would lock all the writers and editors in a room and demand they work out which period was best for each character. As Lord God Almighty I would have final say, of course.

****

Of course, now we should ask ourselves which period was best for each character to picture an ideal DC or Marvel Universe.

I don't really have a good perception of DC History so I'll just give a try with Marvel.

Spider-Man: Stan Lee/John Romita Sr period (1967-1968)
Fantastic Four: Stan Lee / Jack Kirby (1966) or John Byrne (circa 1983-1984)
Avengers: Roy Thomas / John Buscema in 1968
X-Men: Claremont/Byrne run in 1980
Daredevil: Frank Miller run, brefore Elektra's death (1981?)

Aren't I a bit conservative?

"I think the main reason Geoff Johns wanted Barry
Allen back so much was because while writing Wally
West as the Flash he found himself constantly writing
about Wally trying to live up to Barry's example."

**

If true, could he not just...stop writing about it?
Not that I think there's anything wrong with wanting
Barry back, but if your (Johns') problem is that you
keep writing about a thing, stop writing about the
thing! That is of course assuming there's no crazed
editorial mandate to mention it every issue or
something.

i can't speak directly to Johns' motivations, but when I was working on SHE-HULK there was one guy I used to call for info on obscure characters. Thing was, tho, after he'd suggest someone I could use as a villain he'd rattle off a list of every unresolved plot point in the character's history. "And you'll want to address this, and this, and this..."

For some, "not writing about it" is just not an option.

There was never an explanation given for how we got from Maguire to Garfield to Holland as Spider-Man, nor from Clooney to Bale to Affleck for Batman.

••

Tho I have seen people using "plastic surgery" to explain the multiple James Bonds. 'Cuz, y'know, we really want the current guy to have been active when DR. NO was released in 1962.*

* Even Fleming himself fudged on this one. He'd introduced Bond as an older, seasoned agent, but the character became younger as the years went by. In THE JAMES BOND DOSSIER, Kingsley Amis calculated that by the time that book was published, in the mid-Sixties, Bond would needed to have been 12 years old when he was a Commander in the British Navy during WW2!

Well, I can believe that, Mr Byrne, given that he bought a Bentley when he was 9.

For anyone not sure what I mean, Bond's birthdate was given as 1920 in one book, but there was also reference to him buying a Ford Bentley in 1929!

Not a "Ford" Bentley, Robbie! Bentley was its own marque!

And I am not sure the reference was to him buying the car IN 1929.

Right, yes.

And I'm sure you're right. Been a LONG time since I read those books, some of them before my teens (they were the first "adult" novels I tackled).

Well, it turns out I was wrong about Johns's motivations regarding Barry Allen's return. If interested, read this:

It's from 2009.

Question for JB:

In the past, you mentioned that your late buddy, Mark Gruenwald, was in many ways, a guy who was probably better suited for DC.

What was Mark's thoughts regarding Crisis on Infinite Earths?

Was he surprised of what happened to some of the characters?

Thanks
