In one of the threads, someone said they would like to see Essential or Showcase style collections of comics featuring a particular villain, even if such a volume was limited to the "Best of" that villain's appearances.
What villain would you like to see the focus of such a collection?
I've always been partial to the more oddball villains, so my choices probably wouldn't be seen as potential big sellers, but I'll name them anyway.
Mysterio, The Riddler, Mr. Mxyzptlik, Grodd and the Gentleman Ghost.

It was me who said it. I've craved the idea for a while.

My top five (one of them is not really a villain):

1. Galactus
2. Scorpion
3. Juggernaut
4. Destroyer
5. Riddler

An ESSENTIAL GALACTUS or SHOWCASE: RIDDLER, well I'd be ordering mine!

How do we (seriously) get DC and Marvel to do this?

I'd say the best chance of seeing something like this is in digital form. If Comixology were to integrate a robust enough database of character appearances, it would be possible to offer "build your own bundles", whereby you could easily buy every appearance of a specific character in one shot. Personally, I'd be interested in seeing a similar option for specific creators.

For a Essential collection Galactus would be my first choice. Doctor Doom, Red Skull, Dormammu and Enchantress would be my other choices.

For DC Showcase I would go with Darkseid, Ra's Al-Ghul, Circe, Lady Shiva and Black Adam.

Kind of surprised this hasn't been done more since DC released the Greatest Joker Stories Ever Told trade paperback. For Marvel I'd second the suggestions of Galactus and Doctor Doom. For DC, I'd like to see a Braniac and Lex Luthor collection. Then there is the problem, which stories should be included? For Galactus, you'd undoubtedly need the Lee-Kirby FF issues and the JB ones, but other than that? Are there some good Galactus stories I've missed since JB's run on FF?

I'd like to see a Golden Age villains collection of Luthor, Mister Mxyzptlk, Joker, Cheetah and Captain Nazi.

Not really a problem there. These collections are designed to be comprehensive, so it would be sequential appearances until you hit the page limit. Marvel's Essential Punisher would probably be the model to follow for a "villain's Essential/Showcase."

So "Essential Galactus v.1" would be something like:

FF #48-50
Thor 134 (maybe; it was just a one pager, IIRC)
FF #74-77
Thor #160-162,167-169
Thor #180,184 (don't remember these, so possibly cameos here as well)
FF #120-123
Thor #225-228
FF #171-175
FF #210-213
Dazzler #10-11
ROM #26-27 (probably have to skip these)
FF #242-244
Super Villain Classics
FF #256-257,261-262

(Used Marvel Chronology Project as the reference.)

This might be a little long, but if they trim out non-Galactus related sequences it could fit.

Let's (seriously) write to Marvel and DC - proper letters, not e-mails that can get "lost in the system" - and suggest this.

I've craved it for years. I'm a huge fan of Scorpion. I'd love to see his chronological appearances. I mean, I know his Spider-Man appearances, but perhaps he's appeared in other books - it'd be fun to find out.

I'd run barefoot to the shop to buy an "Essential Galactus" volume. Even if some of the stories were no good, it'd be great to see the development of the characters.

The problem I have with "Best of" books is that it's subjective. I'd be lynched if I said this in my LCS, but I consider "The Killing Joke" to be overrated. But if someone was compiling a "Best of Joker" book, they'd probably include it if it was 500+ pages long - even though someone like myself wouldn't be interested. Yet chronological appearances would at least provide most of us with something we like (maybe).

I'm surprised Marvel and DC haven't done it yet. I know they couldn't necessarily sell them that well - I doubt one of my favourites (Catman) would sell an Essential-style volume - but the likes of Luthor, Brainiac and so many others might.

Note: autocorrect tried to correct Brainiac to "brainless". I wouldn't call him brainless, would you? ;-)

My top five would be:
Joker
Red Skull
Dr. Doom
Lex Luthor
Darkseid

Lists like these--and the stories we'd like to see--are extremely subjective, no doubt. And yet there might be some things that readers have not seen before, stories that have been out of print for decades, and so on.

Maybe they'll give it a try. Or, as suggested above, maybe this is something that digital can do.

Doctor Doom
Doctor Octopus
Riddler
Sinestro
Super Skrull

Three 'votes' for Riddler in this topic so far. He is great, isn't he?

Over the last two or three years, DC has done several "best-of" type collections with Batman villains:

Batman Arkham: The Riddler
Batman Arkham: Two-Face
Batman Arkham: Man-Bat
Batman Arkham: Clayface
Batman Arkham: Killer Croc
Batman Arkham: Mister Freeze
Batman Arkham: Scarecrow
Batman Arkham: Poison Ivy

DC has also used villains in their "A Celebration of 75 Years" hardcover book series:

Joker: A Celebration of 75 Years
Lex Luthor: A Celebration of 75 Years
Catwoman: A Celebration of 75 Years
