In an upcoming issue of INFAMOUS IRON MAN (wherein Victor von Doom is now passing himself off as Iron Man's successor), Victor comes up against "the Maker"--an evil version of Reed Richards from the now-bygone Ultimate universe. This inverts their usual roles, with Victor as (sort of?) hero and Reed as flat out villain (he really is--this guy killed his own family just to go underground).

It sounds intriguing but has me wondering if we haven't strayed way too far from what makes these characters who they are. Is it possible for Doom to be the hero and Reed the villain, without altering how we see them?

Just thinking out loud, not sure I have an answer, but I'm posting because this is the sort of deep character work at which JB excels--and he's very familiar with both.

Roy Thomas was using the concept of Victor as the hero and Reed as the baddie back in the 70's. In the 'Power of Warlock' series among other titles.

Doom calling himself "Iron Man" is just too bizarre for words

Once you explain the hows and whys of Doom being Iron Man, the rest of it 'straying' really doesn't matter

"I can't believe Marvel is charging people money for these kinds of stories."

Or is it worse that there are still fans who buy this crap?

Nonsense like this is why I took my entertainment dollars elsewhere several years ago.

There's nothing wrong with the idea of a bad Reed Richards from another dimension. But our Dr. Doom becoming good? That's wrong. Our Dr. Doom using another man's identity? That's really wrong. Our Dr. Doom following the steps of Dr. Octopus? That's a joke!

Stuff like this is part of the reason why Marvel is losing market share and readers while DC is sitting pretty by publishing comics that are a lot more like their movie and TV versions of the characters. No one that sees Thor or Iron Man in the films and wants to read a comic about them wants to read about Jane Foster as Thor or Victor Von Doom as Iron Man. It's just confusing nonsense. Same thing with having two Captain Americas running around with one of them being the Falcon. Or Wolverine being his cloned daughter. For forty or so years I was buying more Marvel comics than DC, but in the last few years I've been almost no Marvel comics (down to just Moon Knight actually after not buying any for a bit) while still buying, well, at least a few DC books anyway.

I WANT to be buying Marvel and DC's big books, but with stories like these, I find myself skipping decades at a time.
