Hmm. Sounds a bit like the ESSENTIALS were petering out around the time the art was starting ro become more and more heavily dependent on the color.

Probably true. I was actually surprised that they did an ESSENTIAL volume for Booster Gold's 1980s series which, in one way or another, was dependent on colour.

They actually did essentials for Wolverine comics published all the way through 2000 and they look terrible. They actually look like Marvel didn't have the original black and white pencils/inks and just scanned in the colored art and set it to black and white. It was "I can't believe they actually allowed this to be published" levels of bad looking.
I'm trying to find an example but google images is turning up negative.

Robbie, I have got the Booster Gold Essential you are talking about and I don't see anything wrong in the black and white art.
Why were you surprised about that?
And why do you think the series was dependent on colour?
In some ways this old series looks better in black and white...

Well, for starters, the series is, what, less than 30 years old? Booster Gold is a very colourful character and I can't imagine him in black and white.
I just feel 1960s/70s - and maybe some very early 80s stuff - lends itself well to black-and-white, but modern strips don't. In my humble opinion, of course.

Am I wrong to guess that you have the same problem with the Claremont/Cockrum/Byrne Essential UXM 1-2 then? Because all the characters in this run are very colourfull there!

I use computerized coloring as the dividing line. Art from the late 80s and even early 90s looks fine in B&W to me (as long as it was good to begin with that is) but things changed when people started using computers.

Robbie, I didn't mean to sound mean. It may be a translation issue since English is not my native language (and I need a lot of practice at it, too).
I've just don't understand why Booster Gold Showcase will be a problem without colours while Essential XMN won't. You even have a JB issue in Booster Gold Showcase that looks great.
I also have the Batman and the Outsiders Showcase (with wonderfull art from Jim Aparo among others) and I prefer this black and white version than the original coloured comics.
Alan Moore Swamp Thing is another example that comes to mind where black and white is way better than original.
Since all this works are from the same time period, I'm just wondering if it may be a case of just don't liking Dan Jurgens art or something like that.
Peace :)

I think Essentials are still going, just under a different name?(Yes,Marvel confusing the customer)Also, bear in mind,up to a point those Uncanny X-Men issues were bi-monthly...two whole months of antcipation, made even worse by the sketchy U.K. distribution!

No, not about Dan Jurgens' art or anything. Modern comics (i.e mid-80s onwards) just have never worked for me in black-and-white. Even the black-and-white late 80s reprints of the Punisher - surely a gritty character that should work in black and white? - didn't work for me. It's a personal preference, whatever the artist. There will be exceptions, of course. I read a black-and-white reprint of the RoboCop movie adaptation in a UK title and RoboCop worked in black-and-white.
I didn't think you were being mean. :)

They replaced the essentials with the Epic Collections, which are in color and more expensive (yeah I know).
