I've often wondered about the X-ray glasses.  Clearly they didn't let one see through objects, but did they do anything?  (Besides parting people from their money ...)

I dunno if this counts as irony ... the gimmicky ads in comics disappeared not long before the comics themselves became cover to cover gimmicks.

Any ad that showed the MEGO line of superhero dolls and action figures... I wanted them all.

Still do!

Obviously X-ray specs.

But, less spectacularly, I was VERY interested in Hostess fruit pies. They didn't sell them in the UK, but the ads were SO good.

My brother and I did get these (great time to be a kid during the Space Race):

The Space Crawler could be mounted to the top of the Space Station, and act as a rotating "crane" when you turned it on... We ended up only doing that once, because the gyrations actually caused whole station to fall apart.

The Station actually survived until the mid 1970s when our parents finally gave it away to Goodwill.

Walmart recently started to sell the Sea-Monkeys.  I bought them and have been running the colony now for a few months.

I keep telling my friends: "Any day now, these guys are going to grow crowns and start building a castle".

I find watching them relaxing more than anything, but I like watching marine life.

Even my young self could see through these ads:

I admit this one sounded interesting ("money back guarantee"), but I knew if it really worked, they would have hypnotized me into buying a lot more expensive products than a $1.00 lenticular disk.

The power of invisibility was certainly appealing.  This ad was before my time, but my uncle had a comic with this ad and I could just tell it was too good to be true.  Plus... a little too dorky.

I don`t know if it`s my British cynicism, but i always thought those ads were `dodgy`! For instance,if Sea Monkeys actually existed, why had i not seen David Attenborough on tv marvelling at them?

Bill, Sea Monkeys do exist! They are brine shrimp. The pictures for the old ads are a tad... um... exaggerated.
