If Marvel or DC had put out this set, I might be able to see your point.
But what's the issue with selling the creators of creator-owned books?

Because it's not selling really selling the books. It's preaching to the choir. The audience for these cards are not new readers or the average non comic book reading Joe or Jane. These cards are being marketed towards those comic book readers who follow creators.

Yes. A Comixology giveaway at San Diego Comic-Con
International
is unlikely to bring in average Joe or Jane. I think that's
an issue with comic conventions, not these cards.

Not even "marketed towards" so much as a fun giveaway for people who attend some panel discussions during the convention.  Most of the creators I've seen talking about this are mildly amused by the whole thing, and see it as a fun thing they might be able to send to their parents later this month.
