I've drawn Hawkeye many times, and nobody ever told me he was deaf.

I knew that Hawkeye was partially deaf from the OHOTMU, but I don't
think I've ever read a comic where that came up.

To clarify, he was not deaf before 1983.

Then the incident with the sonic arrow happened in his limited series (and he got married to Mockingbird).

Everyone forgot about it, apart from Mark Gruenwald, who wrote the limited series (and drew it!).

It turned up again in OHOTMU, because that was written by Mark Gruenwald.

Everyone largely forgot about it again.

Next in my chronology is the mid 90s when I stopped reading comics, so I know not what happened thereafter.

Edited to add: As Steven said above, he was never totally deaf either. He suffered partial hearing loss and used a hearing aid, which meant, in effect, that he was depicted no differently for the most part.

Not really, no... But I do remember when those changes took place organically over time

But isn't that character development? That can maintain consistency in a character, I think, unlike Hawkeye's continually - it would appear - changing deafness.

You can add me to the list of people that did not know Hawkeye was deaf. I don't recall any indication of this either.

According to the Marvel Universe handbook, Hawkeye was rendered 80% deaf in both ears from the event in his limited series. He wore small hearing aids to compensate.

The only time I recall it ever coming up was in an issue of the Avengers, shortly after the Hawkeye limited series, in which he and a group of ad hoc Avengers were on the David Letterman show. It was a mild plot point in the issue.

I Thought Franklin Richards fixed his hearing when he sent everyone to the Heroes Reborn universe?

Deafness is a lot harder to show than blindness; that's part of what made Daredevil work so well. (Yeah, I went there.)

Since sight is our main functional sense, it's easier to display sight issues than hearing issues... especially in a visual medium. Not impossible, but possibly not worth the effort to enhance a story.

Per Kurt Busiek in an Avengers annual backup story, Franklin Richards did restore Hawkeye's hearing (during Heroes Return.) This also accounted for the Wasp's physical restoration, and Tony Stark being a full grown adult again in the mainstream Marvel universe (that is, the one with mutants, Spider-Man, and the Hulk. Yeah, I'm still a litle bitter...).
