Joe Kubert's so good, he takes my breath away. Who wouldn't swipe from him!?•• On a technicality, that Alpha Flight poster is more of an "inspired by" than an actual swipe. I made no effort to match the poses exactly. Kind of like my frequent visits to the cover of FF 1. Same configuration, so the source is instantly obvious, but different in the details.

Kubert's is one of those artist who makes it look easy. What I mean is, you get the feeling he sees it in his head and all those expressive lines just fall out of his brush with ease. There is a lot of life in those lines.
Selfishly, I wish he would have been a Marvel guy.

Kubert was already doing Tarzan, so I would have loved to see his take on the Black Panther.
And I imagine that his Asgard could have rivaled Kirby's. But of course A) it IS just imagining, and B) he seemed so adaptable that ANYTHING he tried would likely have turned out well. As Mr. Byrne seems to manage. New York City, WWII, Wakanda, the surface of the moon, the old west... anything he tries turns out splendid.

Those curious to see Kubert's take on the ancient Norse legends are hereby formally invited to check out his Viking Prince stories... There's a hardcover collection as well as numerous reprints in various titles throughout the 70's.

Vikings, knights and Robin Hood! Remember when comics were based on classic concepts, not the last movie the writer saw?
