I used to enjoy the swipe files feature on CBR and seeing artists get "caught" is my version of rubber necking.

I don't know about this one though.  Frenz has copied himself so it isn't ripping off another artist.  But, would it be an homage?  Can you pay homage to yourself?  Was the original cover iconic enough for anyone to even get it?

Kind of a weird one.

I don't know if this being an "iconic cover" matters. Rather, it was a familiar nod to an older cover in an ongoing tale that readers of this title would most likely remember.

These issues are only 24 months apart from one another. I was reading Thor at the time and although I can't remember now if I noticed the self-homage then, but I'd like to think I probably did.

Swipes usually happen because an artist is letting someone else solve the problems presented by a story. (Roger Stern tells of his days working in the Marvel offices, when a particular artist, infamous four the number of swipes he used, actually turned in pages with the xeroxes he'd lightboxed still taped to the back!)

What Frenz is doing there is not a swipe. More of a wink to observant viewers.

I see the Thor covers as similar to what Todd McFarlane did with the covers of Amazing Spider-Man 300 and 301. Frenz did the same basic cover but with different versions of Thor; McFarlane did the same basic cover but with different Spider-Man costumes. In McFarlane's case it was more obvious, with the covers being only a month apart!

Let's establish a simple rule for this thread: an artist cannot "swipe" from him/herself.

I have absolutely no issue with this… an artist can certainly use whatever layout/poses as a wink, nod or otherwise whenever they choose.

Just to be clear, I don't think Frenz did anything wrong, I just can't figure out what to call it.

I recently featured these, by Mort Kunstler and Tom Palmer respectively, on my Art of Diving blog:
