My first X-Men comic was #138 and, sadly, it was only a few issues later that our host departed that title for other pastures... I managed to track down the earlier issues so that I could see just how fabulous that run actually was (and remains).

Luckily, I was already reading the FF by that time so when Mr. Byrne took over the story & art I was able to get in on the ground floor, so to speak. So I was fortunate enough to catch the tail end of one era and the start of another.

I started reading comics just in time for the end of Charlton comics as a major comics company. Think I got maybe a couple of issues of Wheelie and the Chopper Bunch (although I don't think they were issues JB worked on). Of course when Charlton went on hiatus in 1977 most of their talent went over to Marvel and DC.

I know I bought some Charltons right about the same time, but I have no idea what they were!  I remember the printing seemed different than Marvel and DC and the bottoms were often miscut--like they were perforated then torn.

I probably got DOOMSDAY +1 off the racks, the first run or the later issues where they just reprinted the first issues!

I got into Avengers just as Roy Thomas was leaving. On the other hand, I started Avengers as Englehart was beginning.

Sadly, I jumped on board Uncanny X-Men just in time for JB to leave. The first issues I ever read were #s 129 and #136 from a comic book 3-pack (don't remember what the other comic was; probably Marvel Tales or Amazing Spider-Man), but the first issue I bought off the actual stands? JB's last issue, #143.

When I started reading comics I was about 12 but I knew about super heroes from the cartoons, I was a Marvel guy thanks to the Spider-Man cartoons but the DC character I did really like was 'The Flash.' I started reading two issues before the initial series was cancelled and then he died in 'Crisis' not long after.
