I totally agree with John's Sasquatch. No one else
get's it right, but I will add John's Box too. Not even
Mignola got it right, and he was next!

This is pretty cemented in my head:

John Byrne is the only one for me to do:
Alpha Flight
Dr. Doom
Galactus
Nova
Human Torch and The Thing
Wolverine
Dark Phoenix
Scarlet Witch
Hawkeye
Beast
(I am not going to be redundant and say something obvious like Next Men)

George Perez is the only one for me to do:
Pretty much all the New Teen Titans from the early to mid 80's
Taskmaster
Jarvis
Wonder Woman
Anti-Monitor

Jack Kirby is the only for me to do:
New Gods

John Buscema is the acme for:
Conan
Silver Surfer
The Vision

Jim Starlin is the only artist for me on:
Adam Warlock
Thanos, Pip, Gamora, Drax
Captain Mar-vell

Frank Miller is the only one to do:
Electra
Bullseye

Carmine Infantino on:
The Flash
The original Star Wars crew

Joe Kubert on:
Sgt. Rock and pretty much ANY war comic

Bernie Wrightson on Swamp Thing

Some characters have been done so much and so well, it's impossible to give it to just one artist such as: Superman, Batman, Captain America, Spider-man, Hulk.

On the internet opinions are like daggers to the heart! Seriously though,my take on this thread is that it`s one artist that in your opinion you first associate with one character,i stated Walt on Thor,i love his other work, but Thor is what i love by him,Daredevil for Frank Miller,Captain Britain for Alan Davis,J.B. for Wolverine.

Good shout, Ted.

Mignola's Box didn't get the proportions quite right and it wasn't long before a subsequent artist redesigned him altogether into something more generic and robot-like. Shame, cos the original JB version was very different to any man in an armoured suit that I had seen before.

A thought: whilst I think there have been good versions of individual members of AF, JB is the only person that has been able to write AF to any real level of quality, either in their own books or elsewhere. The current take on the team in Captain Marvel is, I believe a travesty and makes me wonder why they have used them in this way (as a tie into the movie perhaps?). I can't think of any other team that has not been successfully handled by more than one creator.

As a side note: I first encountered AF in their own book (issue 5 to be precise, the Puck story still a favourite of mine) and assumed that there was a huge back story that had unfolded in X-Men. It was some years later that I got to these earlier appearances and was taken back as to how little we were told about them prior to AF 1 (other than the Wolverine links) and yet JB let their back stories unfold as if they had always been there. No shoe horning, just natural.

Thought of a couple more...
Kurt Schaffenberger - Captain Marvel
Ramona Fradon - The SuperFriends
Alan Davis - Modern women. He does draw sexy women! (He also draws beautiful women from other eras, but so do some other artists. I'm not sure any modern artists does sexier women...)
Murphy Anderson - Hawkman, Hawkgirl, and the Atomic Knights.
Gene Colan - Daredevil
Jim Aparo - the Spectre

I’ve enjoyed many versions. And there are many good artists. But Simonson’s Thor is a definitive one for me. I’ve always liked Layton’s Iron Man. Really enjoyed Art Adam’s Long Shot. I also really enjoyed Bill Sienkiewicz’ Moon Knight. Perez’s New Teen Titan too. These artists have done what I consider definitive images of these heroes. Sal Buscema's long run on Hulk is a definitive one for me too. And JB’s Wolverine is unmatched. No one’s ever been able to capture Wolverine’s image since JB left.

I don't think we're looking for artists who draw the best version, I think he
means a version that is definitive and unmatched.

That's what I thought. Only a few responses seem to be responding to that
though.

Exactly. Perhaps I've asked an (almost) impossible question.

I wouldn't have thought so, but…

JB take on Wolverine is tops for me  - he seems to be the only one who can make the head gear look both believable and cool at the same time.

But more important than the art is how the character was handled.  JB saved the character from being written out and plotted/drew the best of his dynamic with the team.  By the end of the run, Wolverine has two of his best appearances -- the Wendogo story ("...Someting Wicked This Way Comes"/Rage") and "Days of Future Past".

Paul Smith did a decent Wolverine and Marshall Rogers and Terry Austin did way too short of a run on Dr. Strange.

I didn't think Smitty's Wolverine really worked. Too many times when he left the dark parts of the costume open for color, robbing the figure of weight.

That's not meant as a criticism of Paul's art. More about the "casting".
