Wow that is a beautiful Punisher cover! I have the Jurassic Park portfolios and wish they would do more covers of his collected in b&w. He's one of the  few artists I think is a crime to color.

great stuff frank and christos, do either of you have a nice big black and white image of the avengers fighting with sub mariner and a group of atlantean soldiers. its very early 80's and i'd sure love to see a good copy of it. i've saved about half of the images you've posted so far and would love to get that one too.

When Marvel made Michael Golden its art director, they (or rather
Wildstorm Press, of all companies) released a limited edition
lithograph version of this classic poster. It features late 90s
recoloring, but otherwise it is the same image. [WHOOPS, should have read page two of this thread, because Christos already posted "my" version!]

I too always wanted the original poster (it was advertised in most
early 1980s Marvels), so I jumped at the chance to own a version of
it. It cost $150 bucks (I think it is one of only 150 printed), but it
looks good in my cubicle
at work!

In recent years, Dynamic Forces also produced a much less
expensive variant print called "The Golden Years."

(Btw, the "heroes on the march" layout is a bit of a forerunner to JB's
covers to the deluxe edition MARVEL UNIVERSE HANDBOOK.)

The ad you mention was actually an ad for a catalog of comic portfolios and such.  Sal Q. productions maybe?  The pics of the merchandise were printed on the reverse of the folded poster. My best friend and I were both Golden freaks at the time and each ordered two.  Our only disappointment was that it was only 11' X 17"!  One of mine is tattered with thumbtack holes and buried amongst my collection of posters of years gone by.  The other is framed and has hung on the wall for years in my home.  I'll have to see if I can find the other one and see who the catalog thing was for.

I didn't know about the re-issue from wildstorm, But I did order the DF print even with the terrible, unnecessary computer generated background.  I never received it at my shop inexplicably and DF is sold out.  No big deal, I still have my originals.

The original title is "The Merry Marvel Marching Mayhem"

This the one you were talking about, Dusty?

I have it a little bigger, but still with the greytone to it.  For some reason, it wouldn't upload as is.  I had to shrink it a bit.

I have about about a dozen B/W page scans, but I'm not sure which ones were already posted here.  And if I'm not mistaken, Martin has mentioned owning a few older pieces of original Golden art.  Regarding the "destroying his pages" stories, I always have to remind folks that the pages that exist probably were the ones given to the inkers.  I'm sure JB can (and will) correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that the pages were divided up between the penciller and the inker in those days.

I love Golden's stuff pre-'Nam, but the style he developed on that series really left me cold.  I love cartoony art, but the faces and some of the anatomy I felt were horrible.  And unfortunately, he continued that path from then on.  His depiction of technology definitely advanced, though.  The Jackie Chan comics and few other selected stories still look like his old style to me, though.

I hope that didn't sound like I was echoing the "old stuff was better".  I don't think that either style is "better" than the other, per se.  But I enjoy the earlier work more than the later.
