There are a lot of "fans" -- and their numbers have increased proportionately as the marketplace has shrunk -- who think the art is "real" only if it is as close as possible to the printed page. As bitter experience has taught me, many do not even understand what a piece of original art IS. Recall my mentioning the Overstreet-style "price guide" for original art, which listed some pieces as "rare"! Sorry, folk, but a one-of-a-kind object is unique, not "rare." Put another way, a page of Rob Liefeld art and the Mona Lisa are equally "rare."

And here's a little taste of what's to come...
It's in our hands now, John.

Ha! I can't tell if that brown blotch is a crayon color or a coffee stain.

One could argue that rarity and scarcity would be defined by the artist and/or artist combinations. Pages of art of penciled and inked by, oh, say John Byrne, would number in the hundreds (thousands?). But Byrne/Austin pages are a bit more scarce. Byrne/Ditko - well, that's rare!
Artists that hold onto their pages create a level of rarity. Walt Simonson pages, for example, would be considered at the very least scarce - some pages exist where Walt was inked by another artist and the inker sold off his pages.
You could further define rarity by the artist and the subject matter. A Byrne/Austin page with Wolverine is a lot less scarce than a Byrne/Austin page with Superman.

However, that was not the point the book was making. They were listing PAGES as "rare," not artists.

How tiring it must be for Walt Simonson having collectors/fans/dealers/investors constantly angling for way to get hold of his artwork? I'm glad he still has it, I bet he has some interesting stories of these attempts, I'm sure he's heard it all.
