Dealers are a downtrodden lot. There has been exactly 1 dealer that I've dealt with over the years, who had proven himself to be honest and forthcoming as well as professional in his interactions with me. (Jim is a rep. Completely different animal.)
The others have engaged in a variety of practices that I have been directly aware of or have heard horrific stories about. Price changing, exploiting artists to further their profit margin from the paltry 75% to fall more in line with the 150%-800% or more, and a single case of a dealer who took a few boxes of artwork from a friend 30 years ago , never to return it. Yep, the guy is still in business. I have suspicions that he is holding onto a good deal of it.
So please, don't take money out of their mouths.

The curious dichotomy in this is that most fans rejoiced when the Talent started getting royalties. (Some did not, mistakenly believing those royalties were coming out of their pockets.) Yet so many, yes, even fans, object to the artists collecting royalties on the resale of their art.Think about this: When I was working on ACTION COMICS, I created a character called Silver Banshee. I was paid my page rate for the issue she appeared in. I was paid royalties on the publication of that issue, and on reprints. Also, I received a payment for her appearance on SUPERGIRL. So far, I don't hear anybody complaining. But, while all this was going on, I sold the pages from that issue of ACTION, and I am sure they have been sold and resold any number of times. If I suggest I should receive a royalty on those subsequent sales, THAT'S when I hear complaints. Where's the logic in that?

I'd bet you a healthy sum Jim Warden hasn't rolled his eyes during a transaction. He's always been terrific with me, and I'm pretty far from a big $$$ collector.
Jim's the best. I've only bought a couple of pieces from him, but it was in-person...and no eye-rolling that I saw. Helpful, enthusiastic guy.

Artists receiving royalties on resales of original art seems fair to me.

you compare real estate with art and intellectual property.By your way of thinking then comics is not an art form thus there is no reason to resell it higher or add extra value in it!And with the same way singers actors and book writers should not take any royalties!BulIding a house (Actually unless you are a builder , you pay OTHERS to build it!)is not the same with creating art in any way.

Not playing devil's advocate here - and I honestly don't know, maybe someone does -- once a painter sells a piece, do they continue to get a percentage each subsequent time that art is sold?
I'm all for comic artists to continue getting a share of original art re-sale.

I'm curious where commissions would fit into this model.

The "gentlemen's agreement" that makes commissions possible would probably preclude a similar arrangement.

I was just comparing a tangible object with another. Some might say architecture and/or real estate are an art form. Example, Frank Loyd Wright. Also most artists do not create their own materials used in their work. Others had to make them.
Not for or against anything, just interesting to ponder.

then again ...if architecture is an art form then they get paid much much much much better than a comic book artist! And again from his work a company can not make lots of money like they make from an artists page when they reprint it again and again and again!Once a building is done they can not use his study to make another !they have to start from scratch! And then again if comic book artists should get paid once why then all the others (music cinema tv books )have to get paid again and again and again? If there was a more fair system in this field then we would not see so many people reaching to the point to ask for help when they reach a certain age when their work is sold worldwide so many times and their original art is selling for thousands of dollars when they sold it for bucks without having the ability to secure any future value uprise! Of course we live in a free market world but do you really believe that it would that hard if a percetange of a reselled page would go to the artist? And noone says to split it in half!As JB mentioned above a 10 % would be enough and the profit would still be high!
