I mean, I'm sure I didn't look like a guy who could fork over $20,000 right then and there (or, y'know, ever).

It's really a no-win with sellers with this mentality. I certainly don't want to be viewed as a mark that can throw away the money and would rather be underestimated and left to make my own choice.

It's the old attitude -- "If you have to ask, you can't afford it."I happen to live at the other end of that spectrum. In 99% percent of the situations I encounter, I can make my purchase without asking the price. But I still ask. I want to know if I AGREE with the price!

@Rich Marzullo 20k?????? give me a reason why not give this amount to Jim starlin himself to draw me a ten page story .Thanks god he is Alive Well and he can accomplish it! The same applies to any living legend!(that includes you MR JB)
p.s. Having also in mind that from that page the actual creators will receive NOTHING!Now they will make a reasonable profit which they REALLY DESERVE!

20k??????give me a reason why not give this amount to Jim starlin himself to draw me a ten page story •• This is what Roger Stern said, many moons ago, when a copy of MARVEL COMICS #1 sold at auction for $20G. "For that," he said, "you could get Stan Lee and John Buscema to create a whole comic for you!!"

If I was to spend $20K on a piece of artwork, I'd rather pay the artist directly instead of an "art dealer who rolls their eyes".

I'd bet you a healthy sum Jim Warden hasn't rolled his eyes during a transaction. He's always been terrific with me, and I'm pretty far from a big $$$ collector.

I've little doubt that Jim could resist a few eye rolls with me, but he is professional enough to do it over the phone or via email and so it goes unnoticed. THAT'S the key.

In this point the comic book industry is far behind from the place it should be... There has to be a law to ensure all this things you mention,Laws that in the movie and music industry already excist!Thats why many actors and singers (and book writers) have a lot of incomes by royalties in all aspects! The only known royalties that are known for the people who work in the comic book field are from repritings ...and we are talking about pennies...right?Why is this not changing????In the past a big fight was won about the return of the original art to their creators. And since then ...nothing else happened! But the industry is making a lot by publishing the issue...the tpb...the essential ...the omnibus ... the best of ...and so on and so on...making a lot of money!!! this should change ...and the change should be applied on the selling of the original art too!And that could be accomplished only by well established laws. Now that i mentioned about reprints...makes me think how easy it is to publish a comic book by hiring.....noone!!!not a writer,penciller,inker,colorist,,,...noone!And still publish books out of thin ...air!And i mention this cause every new generation that reads all you have done in 80s or 90s etc is a new customer group !Giving them comics to read that the only expense to the companies is....paper and distribution!Nothing else!!!Pretty clever!!!!Pretty.....

Whenever it is suggested that the original artists should receive a portion of resales there are inevitably art dealers who will cry that this would cause them to "lose money."Aside from being a mangling of the English language, this is bad math. If a dealer buys a piece of art for $100 and sells it later for $150, having to give 10% to the artist would still leave the dealer with a $35 profit. No loss. (It would be assumed that if there is no profit -- if the dealer sells that $100 page for $99 -- there would be no payment to the artist.) and dealers would, of course, adjust their prices upward to cover their "loss." I find it most depressing that there is any resitance to this idea. I've even heard some say that the artists got their page rate, and that's all they're "entitled" to. So the creator of the artwork gets nothing, while those who had no part in that creation continue to claim higher and higher profits. Dave Cockrum died in poverty, while pages he'd sold for $150 were auctioned for a hundred time that much. Some would say that's fair. Fortunately, not all dealers think that way.
