You could do a warm up visit to the Comic Art Con, John!

There's a Cincinnati Comic Expo Comic Book Trivia night going on tonight at the Pub in the Rookwood Pavillion here in Cincinnati and I may or may not go depending on how I feel a little bit later.I deal with fatigue daily stemming from a TBI sustained back in 1991.

I'll be attending Terrificon in CT this year along with an Albany show in the fall.  I went to Megafest in MA back in April. Mostly a celebrity show, but I got a free pass so went. It nothing else invests fun. I typically go to shows leaning more towards comics & related toys.

Had a weird sort of Thru-the-Looking-Glass moment, this morning.

When I was 10, my family visited Las Vegas, and we stayed at the hotel Sal Sagev, which my father pointed out to me was "Las Vegas" sort of backwards. In 1960 I thought that was just the coolest thing ever.

Since I will be in Vegas in a couple of weeks, I thought I might check to see if the place is still there. Then I remembered I live in the 21st Century, so I googled it. (Here comes the looking glass moment.) I found there was a hotel with that name -- until 1955. Then it had become the Golden Gate. . WTF??

Now, mind you, I was breaking one of my own rules, here, and looking at the first Google response that came up, which was Wikipedia. But other sites also confirmed the name change and date. My childhood was crumbling around me.

To distract myself from my obvious insanity, I clicked over to "Images," and found a bunch of antique postcards. I was surprised to find I actually recognized the shape of the building. And those cards dispelled the miasma of madness.

Yes, there had been a name change in 1955 -- to the attached casino. The hotel had remained as I remembered, at least for a few more years. So, once gain Wikipedia proves itself a reliable source!

Sal Sagev

That's Hebrew for "Basket of Exaltation."

Is that pronounced "sal sagy"? Some of the post cards had that notation.

Las Vagas has changed a lot over the years, but there is one thing that has remained consistent - it's still the desert, and it still gets preposterously hot in the summer.  I couldn't understand why the signature event for Star Trek is being held in Las Vegas -- the city seems to be the oppostite of all of the ideals that make Star Trek great.  But I think I figured it out - Las Vegas is the perfect city to host an event in which you stay inside all day.  I sometimes get antsy staying inside when it is nice out, but this is a chance to enjoy the convention guilt free.  I don't gamble and I don't like the heat, so the outside world is not calling to me in Las Vegas.

Until the nighttime -- once the night comes I will venture out.  Since I assume the libraries and museums are closed at night, I will instead get kicked out of multiple strip joints for appalling behavior and likely be arrested by the second night.

Can you use Kickstarter for bail money?

One thing I hope to do in Vegas is take a couple of hours one night to drive out beyond the light pollution of the city and find a place in the desert where it is totally dark. Then get out of the car and look UP.

A good few years ago I went on a hike in very rural China and spent a few hours laid on a roof, just looking at stars, satellites etc.

I've lived in urban England and rural England but absolutely nothing compared to this. Was just so dark.

If you do this JB, I hope you get a moonless night. That big beacon in the sky can make a huge impact on what can and cannot be seen.

That's a good idea, JB - a clear night sky can be a wonder.  I remember the first time I visited Big Sur - that evening was an explosion of stars I thought I had never seen before.

And checking out the stars is more relatable to a Star Trek convention than casinos!

True, but I'd still be seeing more than I see in my backyard!!

A quick check shows we'll just be coming out of the dark of the Moon when I'm in Vegas, so this should work nicely.
