Was the Captain America who returned in Avengers 4 so different? Let's see. Different costume? No, except for the stripes now going all the way around the uniform. Different origin? No. Different secret identity? No. Different powers? No. In fact, I'm inclined to say the returned Captain America was much closer to the Simon & Kirby character than the guy who was appearing in most of the post Kirby issues of CA, as written by-let's see-- Stan Lee.

So, you force us to ask how many of the things you describe can be credited to Jack Kirby as a "creator." Costume? Joe Simon. Origin? Joe Simon. Secret identity? Joe Simon. Powers? Joe Simon. Ready to scratch Kirby's name off the "creators" credit?

…what Stan did (excluding the possibility of any plotting input from Kirby) was sweep away the post -WW II (i.e., post-Kirby) stuff, kill Bucky, and (not surprisingly) write the dialog in modern Stan Lee style. That may be a big contribution to the ongoing character, but in my book, it doesn't make him the creator.

Switch "the" to "a" and say the same thing, if you can.

I don't think Captain America's origin has ever been in question. Joe Simon and Jack Kirby created the character. Since his "return" in Avenger issue 4 I don't think it can be in a question either that Stan Lee was one of the creators. He didn't create the character but he was one of the people involved in creating the stories. Is it really debatable that the Captain America that we had been reading for decades and now view on the movie screen is a product of the work that Jack Kirby and Stan Lee had done?

When I read comics by Stan Lee and (insert artist name here) It's Stan's voice I'm hearing. The actions maybe that of Kirby, Romita or Ditko but the voice has always been Stan Lee. That has to count as something.

Happy birthday to Stan. I hope he sticks around for many more yet. The Man breathed life into so many favourites.
