Yep, that's from the Gruenwald era of "Captain America."

And being German, he has a pistol holstered under his armpit instead of a shield.

Yeah, Vindicator sounded cool but didn't fit the character in any way.

I find it strange to see characters with names or costumes that don't fit the character. Shatterstar comes to mind. What is a shatterstar? It tells me nothing about the character (it doesn't if sound cool).

Always liked the name "Vindicator". By the time I'd come to understand
why it wasn't appropos (I'm slow like that, sometimes) and had gotten
used to calling him "Guardian", JB went and killed Mac off in what, to
this day, remains one the most shocking, kick-in-the-gut moments I've
ever read in a comic!

(Shakes fists and cries to the heavens) Damn you, Byrne!!!

In old time Marvel there was a wonderful school of naming characters that used words that really had little to do with what the characters were or did, yet fit them perfectly. Cyclops is a prime example. Nothing to do with his power, but you can pick him instantly out of the group. Quicksilver. Medusa.

But more often there were names that went straight to the core: Human Torch, Invisible Girl, Thing, Spider-Man, Hulk, etc.

In the Nineties, or thereabouts, this started to change. Characters got "cool" names that had nothing at all to do with what they looked like or did. "Shatterstar" may be the leader of this particular pack. It's like someone said "What name can we call this guy that's as far from who he is as possible?"

I remember the name "Shatterstar" and nothing else. I do, however,
recall during the DC/Marvel "Amalgam Universe" event, the character
was fused with DC's Starfire, giving us "Shatterstarfire". Still makes me
laugh.

I was thinking about Cyclops and I would definitely know who he was out of a crowd. I didn't even know what quicksilver was as a kid but the word quick obviously conjures imagery of speed. Medusa? Well she has to be the one with the long hair. It all makes sense.

The only character I can think of off the top of my head before the 90s that has a name that doesn't make sense is Nightcrawler but even then, the fact he is blue and creepy looking makes it work.

Yo, double T, he can crawl on walls, and he disappears into blackness.
That is SO Nightcrawler.

Alpha Flight sounds like it has its origins as a military code name.

We go from "Weapon X" (Wolverine) to "Weapon Alpha" (Guardian), later Weapon Alpha leads "Alpha  Flight".  "Flight" is a military term for a unit of 3-6 aircraft and lends itself to a small team of 3-6 members.

I imagine as Department H was creating Canada's own super team, each member was originally "Weapon This" and "Weapon That", and when they were grouped together someone code named it Alpha Flight.  The corresponding Beta Flight and Gamma Flight is something a military minded guy would come up with.

It doesn't make sense as a proper superhero team name, but then again Department H was disbanded before the team could really debut in public, so unlike the individual heroes, no PR guy ever gave the team a proper name.

If I remember correctly, we can blame it on Puck who ended any discussion on changing the name in the first issue.

I was told both my names would be "confusing" since Marvel already had a SHIELD and Guardians.

Marvel was probably right about the team name.  Even though "The Canadian Shield" initially sounds appropriate, most likely it'll get shortened to "Shield" in most dialogue captions.

I'm not sure I could come up with something as evocative though, but maybe something like "The  Northern Light" could have worked.  Something historically evocative in French might also have worked (like Gendarmes), but chances are it would sound weird to Marvel's readership in the US.

When I first heard all this, years ago, I remember
thinking or wishing that JB would do a Canadian Shield
series for DC with a new Guardian and new teammates.

More likely "The Shield," especially if I was writing it.
